Title: Forerunner Gen 2
Post by: 55chevr on August 10, 2013, 07:17:10 PM
I started on the next generation of Forerunner.    The first is a Forerunner knock off profile fuse with a Mustang Stunter wing.   It has 8 flights on it and I am just getting it trimmed but it does fly well.  With Will DeMauro's help I have it close.  The next build is another knock off fuse with a Bob Hunt built cored foam wing.  The wing is a work of art. I have a Tom Morris 4" bellcrank in it.  Fuselage is built up profile ala Crist Rigotti.  I am going strong on it and want to fly it before September.

I extended the nose 1/2" and left the tail moment stock.   The Gen 1 weighs in at a stout 57 oz.   The goal for Gen 2 is low 50-s. With the Bob Hunt wing weighs a bunch less than the Sig MS wing.  I might have shed the 5 oz I want already.

Tom Morris bellcrank will be installed suspended between the wing skins ... Joe

I almost lost perspective on this build.  I actually was thinking of drilling holes in the weight box to reduce weight.  Fortunately I came to my senses. That is something that only a Nascar team would do.

I built the stab and the rudder last night.  I did the same layout for them that I used on the Gen 1 plane.  Light weight and Forerunner dimensions.  I may build up the elevators too.  The wing tip plates are on and the flaps are ready for hinges.

Will - This one will fly well. I am sure of that.  The Bob Hunt wing assembled perfectly. The assembly was really easy as the cradles held the 2 halves in perfect allignment.  Best foam wing I have ever had.  I will show that I can do more than just inside loops.

I never had any doubt that you could do more than inside loops. Its difficult to do a lot when you are trying to trim out a plane that just wont trim 100%.

Going good with the project now that I have 4 planes built for the son and grandsons to fly.   Tough to keep this squadron in the air and build my own plane at the same time ... starting to cover now.  At first I was afraid the orange looked too much like US CG colors but the blue toned it down.

I always try to remember the absurdity of that one.  One of my recent builds didn't allow much room for the weight box, so about half the anticipated weight is in the wing next to the box, to make sure I have room for enough weight in the box.

It flies ... rock steady right from take off.  Needed .2 oz wing weight and 200 rpm increase to get 5.3 second laps. Flew 3 flights and was out of batteries.  Need to get a couple more 3300 4S Lipo-s. Getting the wing cut and sheeted by Bob Hunt was the best move I could have made.

Very nice airplane !  I bet it will be a very good flyer for you. Now all you need is some decent weather to get it trimmed out and practice your pattern.  Good luck to you !  :)

I saw this model fly today,Joe has a winner in his hands. The workmanship is first rate, and the colors scheme really stands out.
Very minor tweaks needed for final trim.
