? for first electric
« on: December 08, 2011, 07:34:22 PM »
Do you discharge battery after flying, then charge. Or just charge them after flight. When is it necessary to balance batteries? dont they balance while charging? Thanks John

after a flight your battey pack should be no more that 75% discharged. You can charge them pretty much straight away - so long as they are not hot.  If they are hot, there is something not quite right with your power system.

I balance my packs on every charge - and most chargers now have a balancing port and balance function

Too answer your questions.
Always Balance Charge
Do not store battery fully charged.  50% on the battery is a good number to store at.  Get a Hyperion EOS battery tester for measurements or use your charger's Storage function if it has one.  I normally just store the battery where they are after a flight.  Warm battery is OK, hot battery or worse yet puffy battery not OK.  I store my battery in a plastic zip bag in the fridge.  I am sure somebody will correct me on something but this is what I have been doing and so far so good.
Hope that helps

Why can't you store fully charged batteries?  ???
Is it because (if there is a problem), they will catch fire easier?
I've been charging my batteries when I get home from flying and then store them in an old fridge (turned off).

(I just want to make sure I am doing the right thing with my batteries to make them last.)  ;D

They age more quickly if fully charged.
Unlike fine wine, they do not get better with age HB~>

I've written on this topic a few times. Here is a pasting of something I wrote last month.
"I've read allot on lipo storage on RC Groups.com. The general consensus is around 50% but anywhere around 3.8V per cell seems to be fine. If you are not going to be using your batteries for even a few days, most of the battery experts (especially Everyday flyer on RCG) feel they should be taken down to storage levels. I now only recharge the night before I plan on flying or even that morning. If I don't use a battery that day I take it back to storage mode. That method seems to work well for me as my batteries have stayed strong. If I'm not going to use a battery for at least a few weeks I put them in double freezer bags and store them in my secondary refrigerator. I also let them come back up to room temp (24 hours), before I charge them. This may require a little pre-planning for those that do not have the ability to charge multiple batteries at fast rates. I can charge about 5 batteries every 20 minutes from storage levels."
Here is an extremely informative Thread from RC Groups that I've also linked to before. Pay special attention to what NipponDave and Everydayflyer write. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1051482&page=67
Here is a chart that I also found on RCG.

I had a friend lose some battery packs because he stored them fully charged, he now stores at the 50% level and charges the night before flying. I also store my batteries at the 50% level and charge them up the night before flying.

I also found this web site regarding regarding Lipo safety, the videos got my attention!
