Title: Flite-E a 1/2A test model
Post by: Larry Renger on August 30, 2012, 12:42:23 PM
Andy Borgogna built this model as a test bed for small electric systems.  It uses the Baby Flite Streak airfoil, but two extra rib bays.  I added the flaps and replaced the horizontal stab with a much larger one.  Wing area is about 165 sq.in. The model flies great!

Current equipment is a Hacker A20-34 motor swinging a 6 x 5.5 APC prop at 12,500 rpm, an 850, 3S pack, a KR timer and 20 Amp speed control.  It flies fine on 42' of Powerline (Spectra).  The size and weight of the equipment are aimed at much smaller aircraft than the stuff Andy uses on his Baby Pathfinder.

I would suggest this as an excellent combo for planes between 150 and 190 sq.in. such as the Sky Sport from RSM and the Baby Flite Streak, Baby Clown and Baby Lightning Streak from Brodak.

Larry,
Why are the pins offset on the switch/program side of the Gov/timer?

I use that jumper as the switch.  When I want to turn the timer on, I just install it as a short between pins 2 and 4 (right to left) as if I turned on a switch.  Very light and low drag.  I store it on pins 1 and 2 where it does nothing.

I forgot to mention what you are seeing in the last photo.  It is how I make small flap couplers.  I drill a hole through brass tubing and solder it to the wire.  This gives two solder joints to hold them together.  Then I squish the tube at the top and drill my linkage holes.  The flat area is big enough to have the bellcrank to flap link biased slightly forward as it should be, and the flap to elevator hole right behind it (or wherever you want).

Now I get it  :!
Thats a good idea for model with a short nose such as this one

Thanks Larry.

I would like to have something like this for my son and I to fly at the park right by my house. I have been thinking about flying a super clown that we have but I am not sure how the neighbors would respond to the Fox 35...

Do you use any super-zoot solder, or just tin/lead?

Tin lead works just fine.  Zoot would be better and Super Zoot the best.  I bet that JB weld would work just fine, too!

This has been a fun project for Larry, and I found a good home for a plane that needed a bunch of work to make it fly right.  This goes through the pattern like a hot knife through butter.  It's fun to fly, it's quite for the neighbors, and its cheap to build.  I scratch built the wing in a couple of hours.  The fuse came with a kit, and Larry replaced everything else with much better designed parts. In grass we just hand launch, it takes off right out of your hands and it is quick on the handle.  Landings are a bit funny, every landing winds up with the plane on it's back but hey any landing you can walk away from is a good landing!

Well, looks like it is time for electric.  Also it may not be so intimidating for the young lad.  As soon as I get enough $$$ I plan on an electric power system.

HI Little Buddy!

Aaron picked up a Super Clown Electric combo for less than the power train sells for.  That is our introduction into power.  It is not a "top notch" set up but it will get us used to the electrical system.  The system will fly any ".35" size plane according to Denny Adamisin so we will probably build a .35 size Classic model for it before long.

Maybe you can also find one.

Mostly scratch build, except for the fuselage.  It was always intended to be E-power as a test bed for small electric systems.

Here is how it started out.  I had the Baby Flite Streak kit that I had for so long I don't even know where or when  I got it.  I had some 1/2a equipment I wanted to test so it seemed like the right plane to build.  Well the wood for the wing and the die crushed ribs were so bad that about half way through the build of the wing I tossed it in the trash.  Picked up some plywood made a couple of rib templates and made a set of ribs.  I used 1/4" for the spars and leading edge and 1/16" sheeting for the trailing edge.  I added one additional rib bay to each side of the wing and used the tip parts from the kit.  Like I said the whole thing took a couple of hours.  The fuse is original from the kit, I used the kit parts for the tail feathers that Larry later replaced with is own version.  I might add much better version.  After that it was trying out a few different motor setups, and later Larry added the flaps, I think more to get rid of the warped trailing edge extenders I used from the kit.  Turns out the flaps appear to make it fly around corners better, but it's hard to tell.  Finally Larry settled on the Hacker motor and it all came together.  I don't think Larry has let me fly it since, oh well there is allways next week!

Andy, you flew it last week! Come on, you aren't THAT old, are you?  LL~

You agreed that it is TOO maneuverable!  I need to reduce the handle spacing and/or move the cg forward.

Darn, I am getting "OLD".  Yep you are right, some of my brain cells started working again and I do remember.   HB~>

Right here!   LL~ LL~ LL~

Actually, lower Orange County, California.  Specifically Rancho Santa Margarita, which is sort of surrounded by Mission Viejo, north east of Capistrano and south east of Irivine.

We have a little park of Los Flores and Buena Suerta in RSM for electric flying, and on weekends go to Whittier Narrows for (gasp, choke, yuk) wet flying.

can you do me a favor...I'm in lancaster/Palmdale.....
whats the milage from there to your park..maybe I can come down for a visit and see your electric fly...

That would be more than 100  miles each way!

We usually fly for about an hour or so starting at 9:00 am. We don't fly locally on a regular schedule.

We usually fly at Whittier Narrows on weekends, and that would cut about  40 miles off your trek, plus many more planes to see.  I can make sure to put you on the list of "who is going flying" e-mails.

While living in the palmdale area is cheaper. its 100 miles from everything....

The closest site for you is actually the Sepulveda Basin.  Just off Woodley about half way between Burbank and Victory.  There are 3 paved circles, plus R/C and helicopter areas.

what will i need to get in to fly there ?
Or for at any of the sites ??
I'm not presently an ama member though I have been in the past

Sepulveda is free, and you do not need AMA license to get in.  Whittier is $6, and AMA is required.
