Flew my e-Vector this weekend!!
« on: March 14, 2011, 07:45:34 AM »
Got the Vector ready to fly and took her out Saturday morning, it was windy and drizzling but figured I'd give it a go anyway. Friend of mine asked me to strap my GoPro camera to my head so did that too. Now keep in mind that I would like to use the following excuses;
the plane was new, I'm a noob, a big fat chicken and it was windy so there ya go. Nothing impressive with my flying but here they are anyway;

flight #1 and 2(don't laugh!);

A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, signed a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is Honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it. -- Author Unknown

Figured out how to get some pics up! Not completely finished yet but flyable. Here she is;

John,
Great looking ship, what are the particulars? Motor, prop, battery, rpm, ESC, timer, line length, lap time?

Seemed like it was doing around 5.0 lap time.

Best,         DennisT

John,
That was almost like a silent movie. Sounds nice compared to a Fox 35.

Beautiful plane!

Attractive coulour scheme. Nice first flights.

Just a couple suggestions.  It does not look as if you are using a safety thong from the handle to your wrist. They are mandatory or you are not insured. You should never trust the timer to restrain the model while you walk out to the handle. Use a helper or a stooge. (some helpers certainly fit the description of a stooge  :-)  )

Thank you for the compliments, much appreciated! Have the wheel pants painted to match now, still haven't finished up the cowl as I'm still trying to get the cooling figured out.

I will have the safety thong installed by the next flight, figured y'all would catch me on that but I wanted to fly that baby and forgot to install my thong. I also usually have my wife or son there but had no one at that time so had to risk using/trusting the timer.

The plane has the following;
Motor is a Scorpion 3020 S-II, prop in the video was a APC 12 x 6 E, battery was a GensAce 4S 2500 mah, timer was Will Hubins 9V, lines were 63' eye to eye. To be honest I'm not exactly sure on exact RPM as I used the adjustment pot to get it where "it felt good". It was a very windy day, winds were aprox 15kts gusting to 20kts! Much windier than I should've been flying the plane in. I can say this; darn thing was spanking and pulling like a freight train!  ~^ I need to adjust my lead outs and probably turn it down a tad but man is that baby smooth, tracks sooo well.

Seem to fly good in the wind. What was that green stuff on the ground, seem to remember that stuff last year here at my house. I would be happy with wind.

Hi Steve,

Well considering the pilot and how bad the wind was blowing 15G20kts I agree that it did quite well. I was extremely nervous but luckily the Vector did very well.

That "green stuff" is wees with some grass scattered about, what we Texans think is a "lawn". What is that odd white stuff you guys get up there? Looks fun!  ;D

Fantastic John !  It would be really  great to see you fly the pattern with your hand, handle position in the same frame as the model. I totally enjoyed watching this.  Thanks, Mike  #^

Am I correct in assuming you are a stunt flyer who lives in Austin Texas?

Thank you Michael, I plan to get some more video from that position and might try and mount the camera to the plane as well. Now, about "the pattern", I'm not very skilled so if I did attempt that I can bet the video would be exciting because you would be sure to see that plane re-kitted rather promptly!!

Well partially correct; I am John Prator and do live in Austin, TX. but the "Stunt Pilot", not so much! ;) Why do you ask?

John,
Congrats on survival in the wind, but for your new plane U need to wait for a much calmer day to figure things out
better. When that happens let me know and I'll come out and we will go through the basics of trimming. Ill send my phone# on PM.
Later,
Evolve or get left behind!

Hi Darrell,

Got your pm, yeah the wind was rather nasty that day. It's blowing 17G23kts right now, sure hope it calms down for the weekend. Would love it if you drove out to fly! There are a few others here as well including a Mr. Jim Thomerson though I have yet to meet any of them I sure hope to soon. We'll get something planned for the future and hopefully you can come on out to Austin!

Hi John,

I also have a Vector kit that I would like to convert to electric. Could you post some pictures of the insides of your plane as to location of battery, ESC, timer, and motor attachment? Thank you.

Hi Ron,

The battery compt is the easiest part, getting the darn motor in there correctly was a PITA for me. Here are a couple of pics I took but please keep in mind not only am I not too good of a Pilot I'm also not too much of a builder, but, it works for me. Here ya go;

Motor mounting;

Bottom view of nose showing the dremel work and then re-enforcement/rebuild

Motor and firewall slides into mounts.

Battery compartment was pretty simple, I made it to hold the two different types of batteries I use which are Hyperion 4S 2500 mah(short and fat pack) and the GensAce 4S 2500 mah which are long and skinny.

This is my battery compartment, I used the two stock spars to hold the GensAce batteries as they fit almost perfectly between the two. I constructed a floor for the compartment using small pieces of 1/8" ply and 1/4" bass wood as can be seen in this photo. You can see where I carved out the two spars so the fatter Hyperion battery could slip between the two spars and rest on the floor. There are spacers in there to keep it from moving around, this set up works quite well for what I needed.

This photo shows a GensAce 4S 2500 pack sitting as she should ready to be locked down. If you notice the two small pieces of wood, one on the top of each spar, they are just popsicle sticks that swing over and across the top of the batter to lock it down. They work very well and are easily replaceable.

Battery locked down in place.

Figured I would show her off since I painted the lower cowl and wheel pants last week. Paint is a little darker than I wanted but that's ok, still love it!

Hope this helps you.

John

PS-I was able to fly her again this weekend, listen how quiet these babies are!!

Looking good!  Model looked really solid on the lines/in the air.  Well, with the one brief exception of that "near earth inverted" snippet. ::)
