I was browsing Harbor Freight yesterday and found a dandy little 800 watt generator (item 66619) for $109.99. It puts out only 120 VAC, no 12VDC. It is very compact, weighs 40#. I was going to buy a deep cycle battery. They cost $67 in my area and a good charger for it is another $50, so this little generator seems a good deal to me. I'm using a 5S2P 2300 mAH A123 battery in my RC Focke Wulf and don't want to charge it from my car battery.
I already have a good 120VAC-12 VDC power supply (an IBM hot swappable server PS 12VDC @ 37 amps) I use to power my FMA Cellpro charger so I can just plug it into the generator.

Now THAT sounds like a good deal Have you got it and tried it out yet?

I just fired it up this afternoon. I used my IBM 120VAC power supply to run my FMA Cellpro 10 to charge my 5S2P at 10 A. The generator powered the IBM just fine. I didn't monitor the 120, but the IBM was able to supply 12.3 VDC @ 25 amps to the Cellpro (25 A is the max input current the Cellpro will draw).
Also, it starts right up. I'll be using it at a Warbirds flyin tomorrow near Youngstown, so I'll give it moreof a workout. I'm happy.

How loud is it? Is it going to drive the other pilots batty? Pretty cool idea if you can get away with it!

I think if ya mix just a touch of castor with the gas, it will help PACIFY the on electric contingent! #^

Well I'd put it next to Russ and crank it up during my flight!

At an electric meet it may be loud. At a glow meet--YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING!!
Seriously, it is quite quiet. Way quieter than weedwackers, leaf blowers, etc.
-
The gold standard for quiet in this size would be a Honda 1000W generator. Can you compare the sound level to one of those?
