Li Po Battery for an Oriental Arf
« on: April 25, 2014, 09:58:33 AM »
I am near the completion of my first electric powered plane.  The plane is a Brodak Oriental Arf.  It's finished weight hopefully will be no more than 45 oz. It will be powered by an E-Flight 15 using a Castle Lite 50 ESC and a Hubin FM 9 Timer.  I want to use a 2400 to 2700 4S 30C battery.  When I look at the List Your Setup string I can't find any consensus as to what brand of battery to use.  I am looking for recommendations.

Thanks

Peter Mick

I've had good luck with GenAce batteries from Hobby Partz. You can get a couple for what a top of the line battery will cost.

Others will have their opinions.  😂

I have a couple of the Zippy compacts similar to the link Crist just posted, and they seem pretty good so far.  :)

I think the "consensus" is that most anything will do.  Having said that, the absolute top flyers prefer one or two of the absolute top brands (Thunderpower?  I dunno -- I fly 'lectric RC, but slime CL).

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

I'm thinking that the Hyperion batteries represent a good quality mid-priced LiPo.
Less money than a Thunder Power, but more than the HK batteries. Very likely better QC and return policies as well.

I'll probably get one each of a few brands and see if I can tell the difference for my first go around in ECL, which will also be with an Oriental. ;)

I have two Hyperion 4S 2500's coming, and already have two of the 4S Thunder Power Pro lite 2700's here....

My question is-

On ARF's like the Oriental, how many people have notched out the wing leading edge and cut a hole in the former ahead of the wing in the fuse, in an effort to get the CG right without tail weight added?
I suppose it may come down to the motor used, and how heavy it is?

I also suppose that I can mock up the assembly and see where the CG ends up before I bust out my trusty Dremel Rotory Tool.

Should I be concerned about weakening the wing by cutting the LE on this ARF?

Thanks for any advice, especially that of personal experience.

I have that same system on a 576 sq in plane and I use hyperion 4s 2500 mah and get flights of 5:45 min. with an 11-6.
