ESC On/Off Switch
« on: June 10, 2025, 01:13:26 PM »
I know that the On/Off is not required and it is not legal to replace the arming plug but my design needs one for reasons I would rather not mention (don't tell anyone but I put the timer start button and the arming plug in the prop arc on my twin.  Brains do fart every now and then.)
So, now that it is clear I have to replace the 5s Spin 33 ESCs with 6s versions I need to add a switch.  Will a simple on/off switch (like the one on the Spin ESCs) work on the Red (power) wire of the BEC Cable?

Thanks - Ken

FYI, the next spin (44) up is too big.  I am having to go to racing drone ESCs to find ones narrow enough.

If I understand the question, the timer button will turn on the process, and a brief hold of the button will turn off.  It takes a couple of second to shut off, not instantly.

The problem is that the timer start button is in the prop arc and cannot be safely reached with the motor running. If putting a switch on the red wire to the timer will kill it - problem solved.

Sorry, I shouild have included the part about the on/off switch, but was waiting to see how it worked.  I should have made and tested one on an RC type extension as noted in the PM.

Slide switch on Spins just cuts power (red) line, rest of the ESC works normally. That will cut off timer signal connected to the servo conector. That is reason why ESC runs few seconds longer (covers sugnal failures and keeps last correct throttle signal). And that is why switched off Spin will work normally if timer is powered from external source (twins or conterprops with dual ESCs).

However existency of power switch is to correctly cut off that power. Large spins have switched BECs with inductance, direct cut off can make voltage spikes, so that switch just shuts off the converter on power entry, not dircetly the output.

And also remember there is pallel slide for security, too much glitches are also not good if you have only one slider.

Move your start switch and arming plug!

And yes -- you just need to cut the red wire of the ESC.  Use a good quality switch, if you can figure out what that is these days.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Slide switch on Spins just cuts power (red) line,.....
THANK YOU!  I couldn't find that answer anywhere, and even better, it is the answer I wanted!

I wish it were that simple.  The nose of the plane was designed for a single motor.  In fact the nose is actually a 2" DuBro spinner with the prop holes filled in.  To call it a Blivit is an understatement now that there are two of everything.  I was convinced that moving the motors as close to the wing as possible was good so I did.  It had been a year since building the nose and what I forgot totally until bench testing the package was that both the timer start button and the arming plug ended up in the prop arcs of the motors.  I intend to recover it this fall if I can work out the battery usage.  Unfortunately, Jeti does not make an ESC in 6s that is narrow enough to fit.  I am going to take your advice when I recover it.
