ESC "Ticking"
« on: September 13, 2012, 05:39:18 AM »
What does it mean when I can hear the ESC making a "ticking" sound while I am flying the plane?
I can hear it above the motor noise.
Everything works ok (Ice 50 - Pletty 20) it's just this sound I can hear.
I am using Set RPM and the other day I upped to gain to 35, could this be it?
I used to hear this sound sometimes, but now it is most of the time.
I doubt if people outside the circle would notice it, but I do.

Hi Russell, are you sure it is the esc?? If you hold the model and run the motor, can you still hear the ticking?

Yes, I'm fairly sure it's the ESC.
I used to hear the sound before but since I "upped" the gain it is more consistent.
I'll have to try holding the model and run the motor on the weekend.

PS; Both my planes made it safely back from the World's, I have just modded the nose for more cooling.  ;D

Hi Russell

Could very well be the gain setting- if too high you start getting funny sounds in level flight - some folks describe it as a "buzz" others say it sounds like pre-ignition in an IC engine.  Suporting data is that you said it became more prevalent after you increased the gain.

I suggest turning the gain down to the LOW setting (think that's around 15) just to se if it goes away, or is reduced. Then try increasing the gain in steps of 5 until it becomes annoying.

Then again, Derek & Randy might be right....  :o

Don't know about the bomb but cutting the blue or the yellow wire is SURE to stop it whatever it is!!  ;D

Actually, listen to Dennis. He knows what he is talking about.

Flew in the wind today and no ticking....oh well, I'll turn down the gain and see what happens.
I was just wondering what the noise is as it sounds like a tooth missing off a cog...weird!!!!  ???

Hi Russell, Glad your models made it back o.k. My flight case was thrown around but there was no damage inside so I'm also pleased that the Newtron will fly another day. That sound is most likely coming from the drum of the motor and could be a sort of "cogging". This sometimes happens at certain rpm's when the timing is not right. Tim and Igor can explain this a lot better than me. There is nothing really in the esc to make a noise like that......well, there shouldn't be! Just turf the Pletty and put a simple motor in the model  S?P.......then the KR Timer will also work VD~

Sincerely #^

The ticking sound is a countdown function that is alerting you (and everyone else) that glow's time is running out!  y1
