Electrifying my 1959 Flight Streak.

Electrifying my 1959 Flight Streak.

June 5, 2021 is our annual Huntsville High School class of 1959 picnic.  It is always held at Jackie Koontz country getaway farm.  The property contains a house trailer, barn, and outhouse.  The outhouse is a story in itself.  It has a flush toilet and hot and cold running water in its sink.   Anyway each year, in the past, I have flown some kind of a RC airplane at this picnic.  This year I decided to fly a U-control aircraft.   What could be more appropriate then a Flight Streak.  Especially one that I built is the 1959 time frame.   About 6 or 7 years ago I refurbished it.  The covering was gone and so was the original Fox 35.  It was then covered in MonoKote and was fitted with an OS Max engine.   I no longer fly gas so I decided to convert it to electric for the picnic.

The first step was the motor mount.  I had one of the printed motor mounts provided by Tom Morris.  They are now provided by Okie Air Model Products.

I tacked super glued the mount to the side of the Flight Streak and marked its location.  A combination of razor saw, Dremel sanding drum and a sanding block I carved the opening for the mount.  I then Epoxy it in place.  About half of the hardwood motor mount beams remain.  Using a drill bit I dimpled the gluing interfaces of the printed motor mount and the Flight Streak motor mount beams.  The mount ain’t coming loose.

More to come as progress is made.

Well the Flight Streak is ready for it’s test flight.

Cut a hole in the leading edge to make room for the battery.  Plywood patch over the top sheeting was added to restore some strength.  Plywood battery box also adds some strength.

The ridiculously large wheel are to add noise weight and hopefully allow takeoff on a ruff grass field.  Pilot and copilot are Peggy Rist and John Rist.  Both of us are members of the Huntsville High school class of 59.  It's old and ugly but I built it in 1958.  I don't plan to pretty it up.  Part of the fun is that it is old like all of us at the class of 59 picnic.

Setup is:   Cobra 2221-10 KV 1500.  Turnigy Plush 30A ESC.   Hyperion 3S 1600 mah lipo battery.   Prop is an APC 10-6 EP.

I will report how it flies.  All I am looking for is loop, lazy 8s, wing over, and inverted flight.  It's old and heavy but it should fly.  Will report how it flies when it flies.

Well it flies great.  I had forgotten how much fun it is to fly a Flight Streak.  The above setup has plenty of pulling power to get the job done.  I was able to do consecutive loops, figure 8s, inverted flight, and wing-overs.  Model weight 32 oz.  Line length was 52’.  RPMs set at 10K.   In fact lap times were too fast.  Next time out I will set RPMs at 9.2K and use 60’ lines.

As I talked about before it was tail heavy.  I added big wheels to get the CG in the right place.  If you are building a Flight Streak keep the battery as forward as possible and a bigger battery may not be a bad ideal.  y1   y1

Well it flies great...    I was able to do consecutive loops, figure 8s, inverted flight, and wing ovaries

I am sure that the wing ovary is an interesting maneuver.  Could be rather difficult to manage depending on the time of the month, however...

Nice conversion I like the motor mount. I am working on a scratch built using a recycled FS wing for sport flying. This thread is helpful since I will being using the same motor. Have fun with your Flite streak they are great flyers.

Hi John. Dave Adamisin. The mounts are designed to fit into most any profile kit that uses 1/2x3/8 mounts. (a 2" opening in the profile mount area)They require an 1/8x1/2  spacer on each side and are designed to be encapsulated by the doublers. It locks them in.

Well I did fly my 1959 Flight Streak at our HHS class of 1959 summer picnic.  It flew great and was enjoyed by all.  Here is a picture of a bunch of old folks!   LL~
