Helle,My name is Jeff Traxler and I am trying to learn more about ECL.I flew for years as a youngster but left the hobby after discovering girls,guitars,and all that goes with them.I have rejoined the hobby a couple years ago and have several nitro ships but I have severe arthritis and starting them,adjusting the needle valve,ECT keep me from flying(SAFELY) as much as I would like. I have been asking questions and reading all amped up but there are still a BUNCH of stuff I need to learn.
    I have a Brodak Accentor kit that I would like to electrify.I have read in another call for help about what that flier wants to put on a Cardinal.These are similar sized ships and I was wondering if his setup might get me going in the right direction.The Accentor has a built up fuse but the engine cylinder hangs out of the cowling for cooling and there is no real inlet for cooling air.I planned on putting some sort of scoop for cooling air but I am unsure of how much air these need and should I cool the battery and ESC also.I am building the wing and the other parts first and have not purchased any components for the powertrain yet.I clicked on the Hobby King link(Cost is a condsideration) and they have a reasonable cost Turnigy 60 amp ESC right next to Turnigy SX motor I was looking at.It is cheaper than the ICE ESC they were talking about.Is it compatible with the Hubin F9 timer?In advance I would like to say Thanx,Graci,Domo,Danke,Gracias,Ect for any help,Jeff

There is one comment that I will make - The Turnigy SuperSimple ESC's (SS60) does not provide a 5 volt supply (known as a BEC - battery eliminator circuit) for the timer.  We have a method of modifying them to provide the voltage that is needed to operate the timer - but without that mod, you would need a separate BEC or battery.

...or if you could use the Turnigy Plush which works with our timers.  If you are going to use one of these simple ESC's MAKE SURE you have a timer with a throttle up capability to compensate for battery wear down over the course of a flight.  I have had good success with the WIll Hubin FM-0c timer...

Absolutely!  I ended up not giving a complete answer:  I had intended to point out that that series of ESC is "Opto Only" which means that no BEC is provided and that one must consider that fact when going for the "reasonable" cost.  Also, contact Will Hubin and get his 'catalog/price sheet' - he has a lot of options available and all are very 'reasonable' cost.   y1

Another option, with an ESC that doesn't provide a BEC, is to use a timer with a regulator chip that converts the battery voltage to the 5 volts needed by the timer and the connection to the ESC. Examples that I provide are the FM-2R, the FM-6R, the FM-7R, and the FM-9R (with the last requiring the FM-9 Programmer). The two leads to the regulator are connected at a convenient point to the black and red wires from the ESC to the battery.

Hey Guys,Thanx for the input so far!!!I was unaware of what the BEC stood for before I made my post so my education is progressing nicely.I will keep this in mind while shopping and will look for a ESC with that feature before I buy one.While I was away from the hobby I built 2 homebuilt aircraft and scrounged to get the best price in every piece I put in them so I will get this figured out for a reasonable price too.It might take a little longer to get together and an electrified nats for me might be out of the question but there is always plan "B".I will just get the old Banshee out and have at it!!!Mr. Hubin,I will be in touch with you soon.I will probably just get the programmer and the FM9 setup as I am sure this will be the first of many electric ships to come.Jeff

Hello Jeff,
In my opinion, the helicopter-style RPM governor just makes life easier, even only for Sport. For Stunt, I think it's a necessity.

    I have contacted Will Hubin and I am going to purchase the FM9 timer/Programmer from him and I have found the CC ICE and Lite ICE ESC on Ebay for $82.00 and change and only $2.95 shipping.If this one works the best I will just have to bite the bullit and eat more MAC AND CHEESE!!!!Construction of my Accentor is progressing nicely,I made a built up horizontal stab to replace the 1/4" sheet stab that came with the kit.It weighed a TON.I think they made it from leftover Sterling balsa!!!The new stab is both lighter and stiffer than the original.I am working on getting the wing jigged up now.

Hi All,
   I have purchased a Turnigy AerodriveXP SK series 35-48 900kv motor for the Accentor.(Overkill?????)I have also purchased a FM-9 and FM-0c timer from Will.My hat goes all the way off to Mr. Hubin!!!!I would like to thank him for EXCELLENT service and advice in my short trip to ECL.I have also purchased a smaller setup consisting of a 2208-14 1800kv motor and matching 30 amp ESC designed for beginners.It cost a total of $23.18 delivered to my door for both pieces so I thought I would give it a try.They were Ebay cheapies.Item nos. ESC180327432293 and motor 180497946245.I have not purchased the batteries yet because the planes are not complete and I still have questions about them and the charger.Any ideas will be GREATLY appreciated.
   This part is for Dennis and Arch Adamisin.Toledo is REAL close to SE Michigan and I would really like to take a roadtrip to your flying field and see these in flight.A couple flying pointers would'nt hurt either as I am still in the REKIT portion of my stunt pattern training!!!!!!

I have had good results with the  KR Timer/ governor with RPMs set at 9200.  The advantage of the KR timer is that it works with standard (cheep) speed controllers such as the Trungy Plush.  It provides excellent rpm control.  It also protects the motor and speed controller in case of a prop strike.

This motor, speed controller and Timer combination comes in at  $153.00   I t has worked first time every time.  It pulls my 576 sq in plane around with authority.  Also it provides settable RPM (I am set at 9200).  It provides instant stop if something gets into he prop.  I tested  this by grabbing the motor with a rag.  It simply instantly stops running when the rag is applied.  Also you only need one set of programming cards so the second airplane cost less.

I have a limited budget for model airplanes so I look for the most bang for the buck.  Also I looked for things that work.  I have seen expensive speed controllers go up in smoke when something goes wrong.  So far my KR timer has protected everything.
