electric motor front mount for profile planes
« on: June 18, 2024, 08:25:38 AM »
I have been searching for a electric motor front mount for profiles. To date I have made my own from 3/16 plywood and used L clips to bolt it to the ship. Was wondering if there is a commercial molded unit that would slip on the nose and either be glued in place or use a few bolts? My plywood ones work but are pain to cut and drill the mount holes on the smaller motors. Any suggestions?

Best,   DennisT

I have a glass-filled nylon 3D printed one that I'm using in a Magician.

Bob Hunt showed how to make them in this thread: https://stunthanger.com/smf/gettin-all-amp'ed-up!/nose-construction-for-rd-1e/msg552047/#msg552047

Okie Air sells them too: https://okieair.com/shop/ols/products/printed-motor-mount

I have an extra Okie Air mount for a 28 series motor. PM me if you're interested.

Hi Steve,
Nicely done and looks great.  Are you selling these mounts, what size motor is recommended, and what is the cost shipped.

Well, I have thought about selling them.

Sized for up to a 35mm can, maybe bigger. As lone as the mounting holes fit either 19x25mm or 25x25mm, it should fit. The holes are sizes for 3mm standoffs to be CA'd in so that tightening the mounting bolts will not crush the mount, but rather have that load travel the length of a 4mm long standoff, which would be really, really hard to crush.

The installation is pretty simple, designed to slip into a properly sized cutout in a 1/2" profile fuselage, then sandwiched in between the doublers.

I haven't tested it yet, as I simply don't have the funds to get the motor, battery, ESC, and timer needed (combination of bidin-omics and twins on the way). But I'm confident that it will work fine.

If I were to sell them, they would likely end up in the neighborhood of $25-30 each, but that's based on 2 year old pricing. The printing service I used for it (my printer is down, but it couldn't do that material, anyways) has probably increased pricing since I had it done.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the reply, I’m working on a new model and I’d like to I
Incorporate the mount I’m to the design, can you send me drawings for your mount?  Also I’ll take one, and please check on the price because I’m sure it has gone up thanks to the Biden & his crew lol.

Take care,
Mike Pratt

Steve,
Yes I got your email, but for some reason the drawing didn’t show up, I clicked on the drawing and waited for 5 minutes and nothing showed,  so I still need the measurements if that’s possible.

Thanks,
Mike Pratt

I'll have to create a drawing for it today on my work computer, and then I'll post it later as a PDF.

Ok, let's see if this works.

Material is PA12 40% glass-filled SLS 3D printing.

Mounting hole inserts (after searching for what I actually did) are aluminum M3 bolt spacers x 4mm long, which McMaster-Carr has very cheaply (about $.41 each, or so). They measure out to 4.5mm (+/- -.13mm), so to insure a snug fit, I sized the holes to 4.37mm.

Fuselage cutout needs to be 2-3/8" long by 2" tall. The slot can be made wider so that 1/8" thick X 1/2" wide plywood "bearers" can be inserted above and below and extend as far back as needed.

There are grooves and shallow holes/dimples modeled into the top and bottom surfaces to ensure actual mechanical tooth for the epoxy to hold.

It is currently sized for a 2" spinner, although it can be adjusted to fit nearly any size (within reason).

Let me know what you think.

Thanks Steve, I got what I wanted, now when can I get one to try out?  I assume the cost between $25.00 tp $50.00 plus shipping so send me your address so I can send you the funds.

Thanks for your help,

Mike Pratt

I'll get an order placed today. PM to follow with address and such.

Quick question on it - do you simply want one as a prototype, or do you want/need more?

Steve

edit: I've ordered a couple for you and a couple for me, along with a couple of other goodies. Estimate is 7-12 days shipping, after the 2-4 days manufacturing. So, hopefully if all goes well, I'll have them in my hand by about 8/24, and can then turn around and ship some to you.

Steve,
Yes, I want to try one in my new model and make sure it works as intend, this one will used on a cobra electric motor on the new prototype, I’m sure it will be fine but I’ll let you know if there are problems.
