Electric Gladiator
« on: December 12, 2009, 01:24:15 PM »
Just flew my converted Gladiator.  This one is powered by a KMS Quantum 2826/05, just like the ones that Randy Smith sells.  Suppose to be
very similar to the AXI 2826/10.  I left my esc control settings like I had for the AXI.  First flights were great.  Motor ran just like the
AXIs I've used before.  APC 12-6e  Always easy to fly a plane that has
already been trimmed out.  Only thing I might do is add 1/4 tail weight as I'm a tad nose heavy.

This was a convert as this plane had a resonance issue that kept any IC engine from running correctly.  Now that's it's electric,
I have a excellent plane I can use.  An easy fix-conversion.

Very nice Robert!

What batteries are you using? And what are your run rimes and total discharge?

I'm using a 3300 mah battery, but have not done a full flight yet, so I can't say how much I'm pulling.  If it's
like my other planes with the AXI, then I would estimate about 2200 out of the pack for a 5min 20 second
flight.

WOW  Now THAT is a smokin hot conversion - WAY TO GO!!!   H^^  Nice to hear of someone using Randy's OTHER motors too!

Ironically enough we are looking at taking one of my Dad's airplanes that (apparently) had a resonance in it and converting it too - so I know where you are coming from...

Robert,
Cool!  How about a picture or 2 under the cowl?

Oh no, someone wants to see my mess!
As with all my converts, I just have a mess of wires until
I'm sure it works, then I clean it up a little.
Right now, the timer sits in front of the battery
and the esc floats between the top of the battery and the
cowl.  Just hope the cowl doesn't come off.

Hi Robert,

Since you will only be pulling about 2200 out of the pack, I have a suggestion that might help. Why don't you use a 3000 MAH which will only weigh about 12 oz. then you should not have to add any tail weight and you still have plenty of head room in the battery.

I am using a 3300 right now on my electrics that I converted to electric and have to move the battery back to give me the tail weight I like to fly with. Rather than buying new batteries now, I am waiting for the spring to buy the 3000's since I won't be doing much flying in the winter and they would only go to waste. Then I really plan on putting in some flying time. I am also getting 5:20 on my flights.

Hobby King has the 3000 MAH Turnigy for $21 and change. Probably $30 shipped. My friend and I are using this brand of battery and they seem fine. Hope this helps.

+1 on the Turnigy/Flightmax/Zippy packs...

Heck of a value - I've got 150-175 cycles on several packs for my helicopter and they are going strong.

If you pay $30 for a battery and get more than 30 cycles out of it you are ahead of the game and it beats the price of fuel. Which means you have to fly that often to get your monies worth.
