E-flite 32 Runs Hot
« on: June 24, 2012, 10:21:10 PM »
I ran an E-Flite 32 for the first time today and found that it runs quite a bit hotter than what I'm use to with other motors.  The temp after a flight was about 165F measured with an IR thermo,  the ole finger test verified the temperature.  It was on 5s with a 13x6 prop running about 8500 rpm.

Do Eflites run hotter than other motors?

I run one ( E-32) in an SV-11 and it runs cooler than the E-25 I had in it before. There are many variables , of course, from cooling entry to exits, aircraft weight, ESC settings, cowl biforcating ( thanks Bob H. )and spinner design.

Since it is a "big block" as compared to the E-25, it requires some space on all sides to allow air to pass.

The last temp I took was 117 degrees( F)  when the outside temp was low 80s.

Thanks Frank
My Plents run at about 115F, my ambient air though is about 95F.
Does the timing setting affect motot temp?  I'm set at "normal" on ICE50 and 20deg on Jeti, both run hot.  Is 5s appropriate?

I can tell you that 5S is correct- several, including Dean Pappas ,steered me properly in that direction. I use a Phoenix 45 and an FM-9 Hubin timer. My ESC settings are on the mild side( e.g.- PMR at 8) because this motor puts out loads of power and , IMO, doesn't require being set to the max .
I'm swinging an  APC 13x 5.5 EP @ 9,400, 62.5 ft.  .018 eyelet to eyelet  and getting  a 5.3 lap.

If you haven't biforcated the cowl, suggest you look back a year or so  in M.A. and  read Bob Hunt's column/pictorial.
That, combined with one of the soon to be released Tru-Turn "Turbo Cooled" spinners( make sure it's cut for a Pusher Prop- cone and backplate) should  help.

Don't know where that "smiley" came from, but  I set mine at 8
