DPS-1200 Tango Uniform, Boo Hoo
« on: September 10, 2021, 06:46:09 PM »
One of my HP DPS-1200 power supplies went bad after many years of faithful service.  I am particularly saddened that it's a floating-ground unit, so replacement will be more work.  I'm shocked to see that DPS 1200s are now running over $100, although Amazon has something like it for $28: https://www.amazon.com/HP-Platinum-656363-B21-Certified-Refurbished/dp/B07BH56W76/ref=dp_fod_1?pd_rd_i=B07BH56W76&psc=1

Will, what do you recommend for a small power supply now?

What do you reckon went bad with my DPS-1200?  The light comes on for a second after I plug it in, then the light goes out, and the unit puts out no power.

It's broke?

Sorry Howard I couldn't help myself.
Is this to be used as a power supply for a battery charging station?

Yep.

Howard,

Your HP unit looks like the "cat's meow" for a power supply with it's size and shape, but rather expensive. I built my own power supply unit from two Dell "refurbished" units rather inexpensively. For instructions on how to do this, download the PDF entitled "Turning to the Dark Side - The Building of Circulas 46 IIe " from the flyinglines.org website at: http://flyinglines.org/nunes.circulas.article.pdf. "Part 5 - Charging Station" shows how I built my power supply. With the help of the YouTube videos, I was really surprised how easy it was to make a a 24V-1000W-41A power supply. In fact it was so easy I now have two of them. You can find the Dell refurbished power supplies on eBay for about $10 each, including shipping.

FYI, the Dell "refurbished" power supplies are usually pulled from a bank of critical servers at a data centers. Once they reach a set number of hours of use, they pull the old unit and replace it with a new power supplies (hot swap). In most cases there is nothing wrong with these units. The blow them out and label them as "refurbished".

I got tired of them failing, so I bought a unit from Revolectric. It is near 1500 watts, and powers the PL-8 with 6 6S's at full song. Had it for a few years now, and works perfectly.

Ironically, I just gave a heap of money to Mr. Michael Dell for a new calculating engine, so I can only afford the secondhand Dell power supplies.

Hi Howard,
I also got tired of the Hp1200dps and stopped making them as my failure rate was too high. I have been making the Dell A870p which is very close in power and very easy to make and best of all dirt cheep. I will post the basics . More can be found on rcgroups or with google or just message or call me. These have been very reliable. There are 2 different versions of this supply the one pictured is the "quiet version" but the "noisy version" is not really bad either and the fan adjusts under load. Either work fine

Just a couple of side notes here:

The prices have gone up on the HP because the bit coin miners are buying those up and driving the prices up.

The Dell 870p are still very small and not much  larger than the Hp. The ground is also very easy to float. Less work than the HP

Revolectrix is now gone . They closed up shop about 2 weeks ago supposedly due to the inability of of them being able to get the parts to build the chargers. They had been out of stock on many items for a long time.

I've used the HP 1200's mentioned for a few years.  The price was about 2 for $25 when I started, then it went up like now, then back to inexpensive and now back up.  We are competing with the bit coin miners.  They will pick up a different line for a while and prices change.  I haven't had problems with the HP 1200's yet, but the units we are buying are used.  I don't doubt others experience, but am currently using what I  already have.

As to Howard's question on the HP 750w, here is a good thread for converting them.  I haven't tried any but the original HP 1200's, but many different PSUs are used by the RC guys, including the HP 750's.

https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?3137941-Converted-DPS-750-PSU-info_dump

I used brass bar screwed onto the tabs to mount the output wires.  It is easy to drill the power tab on the PSU to mount and/or reuse the brass with output wires.
