Title: Disposing of old Li-Po's
Post by: Roy DeCamara on November 21, 2017, 12:59:19 AM
I know this subject has been covered before on this forum, but I never have had good luck with the subject search feature. So I will ask for your advice.

I have several batteries to dispose of.  I have drained them to zero volts and soldered the leads together.  The balance leads have been clipped off.  If the batteries are punctured in this state will they catch fire??  Should I put them in salt water and pierce them or can they be safely tossed in the garbage dumpster in the state I now have them??   I did some internet searching for places that I might take them, but nothing real helpful was found.  One place I read about sounded like maybe more of a industry recycle  business and is a 110 mile round trip away, so not to practical.   Thanks for any helpful suggestions......................

If they are fully discharged and the leads are connected, they can be thrown in the trash, unless there is some local restrictions on that.  You might try calling some place like BatteriesPlus to check on that.  There are no recyclable materials in LiPo's.  There also are no heavy metals or hazardous materials.

they are not landfill friendly. Office depot and others usually have a recycle bin for computers and batteries, give them a call.

My local Radio Shack took a bunch of puffed LiPo batteries off my hands. You could see if there is one near you and what their policy is.
