New Guy In Forum
« on: February 19, 2012, 07:44:26 PM »
Hi All,
I just wanted to say hello as I'm new here.  Thanks to William Demauro and Bob hunt for turning me on to the forum and to Sparky for helping me get registered due to registration being closed.  Anyway I've been building & flying one type of model airplane or another for about 33 years from indoor rubber FF to outdoor FF to CL racing to micro RC and helis. So now I've decided to give electric CL stunt a whirl.  I can't stand and turn with the models anymore due to massive car crash injuries in 1995, so I fly from a wheelchair, don't laugh, it's being done and not only by me. I'm finding the info on here to be great, and very helpful so thanks to everyone participating for this resource,  Take Care all.

nice to have you here James - look forward to seeing what you come up with for electric.  Do you have any projects in mind?

Hi Wynn,
Thanks, I have 2 Ringmasters that are already built (one of them flown) and set up with IC engines. I'm going to go ahead and convert the unfinished one to elec. All I need to do is cut the middle section of ply doubler out and build up a mount for an elec. motor & go from there. Does anyone have a sugestion for a particular motor for that plane, and a prop & battery?

Hi James,

We had one of our club members in a wheel chair after a bad motor bike accident. He had a go at wheel chair flying, and what we instantly discovered was that you need a good constant pull on the lines. This sounds rather obvious, but all of us without any physical handicap take it for granted that we simply walk backwards a little if the line tension goes slack. Having a good solid rpm suddenly becomes vital if you do any stunting, and what we had the most success with in powering simple stunt models with was with diesels. They run at a solid rpm and will not suddenly flame out if the setting is not perfect. Now that we have good electric systems available, they are even better than diesels at doing this, so your timing in getting into this right now is spot on.

There are quite a few electric Ringmasters around, so I'm sure that the guys will chip in and help here. It's not a great stunter, with its thin wing and no good place to stick the fuel tank (battery), but it is rather cute and nostalgic. Whatever you decide on, I can guarantee that you will be impressed by electric stunt. This forum is also a wonderful thing and you will get as much help and advice as you need. Good luck with this new adventure!

James:
WELCOME to the neighborhood!  Got ideas on how you can get started with your Ringmaster, but I will defer to "ElectroBro" John Cralley who's electric Ringmasters have won awrds at the annual Ringmaster Round-up.  May as well learn from the best!

James,

Here is my current Ringmaster setup.

I have two S-1 electric powered Ringmasters.
The electronic specs are listed below.

One is an RSM Old Time Legal S-1 kit build. 32 oz
One is scratch built (using RSM S-1 Old Time Legal plans as a guide). 28.5 oz

42" span
383 Sq area

Scratch built has a Scorpion SII 3014 1040KV
Castle Creations Phoenix 45 ESC (Using Control Line set RPM Governor mode.)
Rhino 4S 1750 20C or Zippy Flightmax 4S 2200 20C Battery
Will Hubin timer FM-9
APC 12-6 electric pusher cut down to 11"
60' lines (eye to eye).

RSM Old Time Legal kit built is the same as above except:
Scorpion 3014-22 motor 892 KV
(Scorpion has replaced this motor with the "new" Scorpion SII-3014-830 KV)

I understand that the "new" Cobra motors are supposed to be very good but not quite as costly as the Scorpion motors. RC Dude (and probably other vendors) have the Cobras (as well as the Scorpions). I have also used the "cheapie" Turnigy SK3536 910 KV motor from Hobby King and had no problems with it.
