I'm converting a plane to load the batt from the top and was wondering how to attach the canopy now, I want to use magnets but how? Also now that I have easy access to the batt compartment do I still need an external plug or can I just plug in the battery at the circle before I fly.
Thanks

I personaly dont care for magnets, to get enough magnets to resist the cooling airflow pressure buildup inside makes it very hard to get off IHMO
your mileage may vary
I prefer a pin and a 4-40 machine screw,or two machine screws

Put a catch at one end if you are using magnets. This way only one end is secured with magnets, the other is notched into place. Putting a rubber band inside to add security and prevent fly-away might be a good idea too.

The idea of the external battery arming system is for safety. If there is a problem and you need to disarm in a hurry you won't be able to if there is a canopy in the way.

Ah, gottcha, I will install one.

What is that design? It's pretty cool looking, from what I can tell. It would be cooler with IC power, of course! ;) Steve

A bashed Legacy of my own design.
Funny you should mention IC. While going through my pipe woes I more than once wished it was electric. LL~

Well, I've seen batteries fly out, ('lectric) motors fly out, batteries poop out in flight, models launched with batteries not charged, prop/collet fly off, batteries puffed up and burn, batteries puffed up but not burn, etc. ALWAYS a way to have things go wrong. With a new power system, you've got a lot of new ways to have problems. That's the way it is, and always will be! Wait until the new flash steam powered stunters come out... LL~ Steve

I agree with Mark on this.A bolt may take 10 seconds longer to get the hatch on/off but it is far more secure. While judging scale at the Nats this year I asked a competitor if the magnets on his hatch worked well.Shortly after the first takeoff it departed the plane..........

Thanks for the replies
After much hmming, pondering, and racking my feeble brain n~ It was just easier to go the dowel 4-40 route
Thanks again y1

I use these, they work fine provided that the hatch isn't holding anything in, i.e. you have a separate mount for your battery, and the hatch is just a cover.

I use tiny "Rare Earth" magnets from Radio Shack. Match them in pairs-one on the hatch and a matching magnet on the fuselage. You have the extended power of two magnets really locked together! Adding guides about 1/2" long, it simply doesn't get loose!
