Conversion of Magnum
« on: November 28, 2010, 09:23:25 PM »
Guys,
Looking to convert my Scribe Magnum from wet power with an OS 52FS to electric. This ship is a full size 690 sq in ship at about 67 oz. My though is to use either a Hacker A40-10S V2, 650 k/v or an E Flite Power 46, 670 k/v with a 5S1P pack, CC ICE50 ESC. I have been looking at the Plettenberg Orbit 25-14 but it seems that the Plettenberg works better with the Shultzie 18.46 F2B ESC rather then the CC unit and I've invested in the CC link and field link so I want to stay with CC. I'm hoping to use a APC 13x5P at around 9100 rpm flying on 68' lines aiming for a lap time of around 5.4 sec.

Any thoughts on the motor selection?

Best,         DennisT

Can I jump on this bandwagon.  I also have a Magnum and thinking about doing an electric conversion on it.  Mine was built from a standard SIG Magnum kit.   Never heard of a "Scribe" Magnum, what is that ?

Allan,
The "Scribe" is my version of the Magnum, just a few minor changes (1/2" longer tail, slightly larger stab/elevator, different tail, take-a-part). It is very close to Bob Hunts Saturn #. Still this is a larger size stuntship then most of the conversions listed above with Paul Walker's Impact being the closest. I would use Paul's setup (or Kim D's in some of his early posts) as it is an excellent setup but I have all the toys for the Castle Creation ESC and know how it works so I want to find a setup that is high quality for this approach. There is a post on the Plettenberg motors and it seems like it kinda works with the CC ESC but it fits better with the Shultzie. Looking at the available motors that put out the kind of power I think is needed narrows it down the the Hacker, E Flite. The Hacker is 1/2oz lighter but both can take the 18.5 Volt pack and will swing the 13" prop. Just would like to get some comments on how they hold up under stunt conditions.

Best,            DennisT

Guys,
Decided to go with the Hacker 40-10S, 670KV and the CC ICE 50 ESC and the TP 5S1P 3900 ProLite V2, on of DennisA's APC 13x4.5P props. Originally I built this ship with a piped OS 46, a take-a-part using Paul's Impact approach. The whole power train was about 20 oz, the ship has also been powered by an OS 52 FS and a PAW 40 diesel. With the pipe layout the fuse was deepened for the pipe tunnel, it is still there. I have to look at the available space above and below the wing to see how to layout the equipment. With luck I can sneak the battery in the pipe tunnel with only minor mods. First thing will be to remove the old beam motor mounts and crutch (this was a basic ST60 type mount). I plan on front mounting the Hacker onto a 3/16" ply firewall that will have 1/4" finishing wood screws through the ply doubler into the firewall then adding 1/4" gussets front and back and a 1/8" lite ply horizontal plate that will stiffen the nose and be the floor for holding the battery. I will mount the ESC, Timer and power switch (I like to use a solid flip switch from Home Depot) in the bolt on cowl. This worked well in the Stuka conversion. The big question is with this type of take-a-part construction (full wing bolted to fuse front and rear former) if the battery fits in the pipe tunnel can I get the balance correct. The Hacker is only 9.3 oz which is at least 2 oz lighter then any of the IC engines. I also plan to redo the tail as during the last refinish I painted it and added 1 3/4oz over the film covered original, this should help. Plan "B" is to do the top loader and have the battery more in the nose and over the front part of the wing. Target weight is to get it to <66oz.

Hi DennisT,
T stands for???
Batteries in pipe tunnels have typically led to vertical CG problems, so be careful if that is your approach.

Allan,

You are correct, it is a A40 10S, 750kv. Planning on starting with a 3900 mah pack, 5S1P pro lite V2. Hope this can be reduced to 3300 I think it will depend on how much weight I can get out of it.
