Title: Collet question
Post by: Randy Powell on April 12, 2016, 03:25:54 PM
So, where are guys getting collets for electric motors? I need a 4mm shaft, 1/4x28 collet and I've found them but it seems most are too short. I had one that was maybe 3/16" longer than, say, the collet that comes with a E-Flite Power 32, and was using that, but I managed to brake the thing and now it seems all the ones I have are too short). Not enough threads to get a prop nut on.

Any thoughts?

I'm with Howard.  What motor are you using?  The e-flite has a 5mm shaft.

For RC use I've used these,
The tru turn one is super long. It's designed around their spinner.
The great planes one is cool because it's just a standard 1/4 28 nut. Hopefully these help.

Sorry, typo. Yes, it's a 5mm to 1/4x28.

I should note that other than E-Flite I'm having trouble finding a 5 mm to 1/4x28 collet at all much less finding one with a longer shaft.

Why don't they make these out of brass?

Crist,

But this goes from 5mm shaft to a threaded end that is M6 6mm. I'm looking for one that is 5mm at the shaft with a 1/4x28 thread on the prop end.

Sigh....

Randy,
Do you need and e-flight collet assembly?  I have plenty in my tool box.  Will be in Portland early afternoon on Saturday.

Alan

They also have them in Hobbytown, Tacoma.  I was there on Wednesday, there is plenty of everything.  E-Flite spinners are a different animal, the collet is built in.

The E-Flite jobs are just a touch too short (for this plane). I had a couple of Hyperion units that are about 3/16" longer and work fine, but apparently Hyperion doesn't make there anymore. Luckily, I found another Hyperion unit so I'm good for now.
