Cobra has made some changes.
« on: February 20, 2017, 05:44:47 PM »
I just received a brand new Cobra 2826/10.  Cobra has made some changes to this motor.  The front prop adapter is now a 4 bolt instead of a 3 bolt unit.  Also the shaft is longer as it sticks out the back.  It is too long for a standard compression prop adapter.  Because of the 4 bolt prop adapter pattern the Cobra fan unit will no longer work on this motor.  Not really bad stuff but not the same - same.  I emailed Innov8tive Designs, Inc. and got the following response:

John,

Cobra did make changes to all of their motors last year without notifying us first.  This has caused issues for customers like yourself that have used the earlier versions of the motors in the past.  The switched from a 3-bolt to a 4-bolt prop adapter, and also increased the length of the shaft sticking out of the back side of the motor on some models.  They also did not make the changes to all of the motors all at once.  Instead, they have slowly changed over one model of motor after another as the original parts stock ran out.  This also makes it extremely difficult for us to stay on top of which motors get updated with each successive order, so we can take the time to shoot all new product photos to make sure that he product is properly represented.

I have personally had countless conversations with the owners of company that makes the Cobra motors about this, and told them not to make these types of changes without a clean delineation of introducing a newer Version 2 motor so that customers would know that changes have been made.  Unfortunately, time and time again, my suggestions have fallen on deaf ears and situations like this arise.

The shaft of the motor can be pushed out, and the retaining collar and set screw that is included in the hardware kit can be used to hold the motor together with the shaft in the new position.  The shafts are a press fit into the motor housings, so after the set screws are loosened up, you do need to use a drill press or arbor press to push the shaft to the new location.

Regarding the cooling fan, do you have another motor that you can use it on?  I have spoken to Cobra about the cooling fans, and they have told me that there was not much call for them, and that they currently had no plans to make newer versions of them with a 4-hole mount to fit the newer style motors.

Let me know what will work for you, and we will do our best to help you out.

Best Regards,

I have not moved the shaft yet but I have replaced a shaft on another 2826 Cobra so it isn't a big deal.  Just wanted to give a heads up To all of you gear heads.

I hope the change in design isn't across the board. Feeling like I should've stayed with the E- Flight Power series. I'll have to investigate further.

As I said nothing bad here just different.  The new motor looks great and it is the same size, weight, and mounts the same.  Still a lot of bang for the buck!  The fan is a no show but how many of you have actually used the Cobra fan?

If there are no changes to the mount, case dimensions and shaft distance for  front mount  situations...and  if they kept a 5mm shaft ; I'm ok.   I already have this particular aircraft  near 80% completion(less finish).
Looking  ahead ; hope that if I ever need to replace a motor, it'll be a direct swap.
