Title: Check out the electric trainer
Post by: Larry Renger on July 23, 2012, 04:02:47 PM
I have a thread on the new club electric C/L trainer in the main forum.  I put it there because I thought it would be of general interest.

The final 3 "production" models are done and the final prototype flown.  All should be ready for the acid test, the kid flying at Compton airport on Sunday!  I have hopes that we will be able to provide training all day long with only 4 models (10 battery packs and 6 chargers).

I have not had the courage to purposely crash one of the prototypes, I suspect that it will be done by "professonals" over the weekend.  %^

When I worked at Cox, we wanted to crash test some new designs, and couldn't do it untill we set up a heavy barrier at 45deg and flew straight into it. When we were flying, we would invariably pull up before hitting the ground; couldn't reliably kill the reflex.  We could, however, fly straight and step forward to hit the barrier. ( The models passed, BTW )  ;D

Hi Larry, this is a great job that you done here! Trike undercart, pusher prop, tough plastic construction........everything that you need for a good trainer. One more thing.......it also looks nice and will be attractive to kids. This is something that's important if you're trying to get kids interested and often overlooked by many of us. I can see you've been around this stuff for a while! Very impressive!

I would like to compliment my friend and mentor Larry Renger for the hard work he has put into this project.  Including sneaking around after the elections and making off with the signs to make these planes.  The man has brains and currage. y1  I have had a few flights on these planes during the testing and I can tell you they are much better than any trainer I have flown before.  Especially with the throttle control and no messy fuel to deal with.  Anyway wish us well on Sunday, the moment of truth is rapidly approaching.

Thanks guys!  It is always nice to be appreciated.   ;D

Now comes the acid test on Sunday.  When they are bounced, how much punishment can they take?   ~^

Please post after pictures -- particularly if you've had some crashes, so we can see survivability.

One full day of training at Compton Airport with just one of the 4 models used, and NO damage beyond some scraped paint on the nose!  No repairs needed!

It did, under full power.  NO damage to the basic airframe, only the ply motor mount.
