Changed motors - remember to ck ESC settings
« on: September 22, 2025, 08:01:38 PM »
Guys,
A week ago I swapped out the BadAss 2320 820Kv for an 2814 980kv in my rescue Ringmaster. The ship needed more power as it is terribly overweight. The swap out took some fitting and a new mount wall and clips but all went well. Prior to the change the ship was doing a 4.75 lap time on 60' C to C lines. Well I go to the field with the new motor, set the timer for 10 sec to just get a few laps and make sure there wasn't anything crazy at I missed. Ship fires up and off we go. Everything was fine with the controls and thrust line, but it seemed slow. Set the timer for 30 sec to do a couple test maneuvers and get a lap time. Well just got a single lap time of 5 sec. The wind came up and had to leave for the day. Got back out today and this time I checked the lap time several times and it was again right on 5 sec.

I get home and kinda going through why this is slow, prop pitch is 7 rpm was set for 10K. I never thought to go through the ESC set up and correct the Kv value. It was still set for 820Kv instead of the 980Kv for the new motor. I have corrected that and hope to get out tomorrow and see if that does the trick.

I made the same mistake back in 2019.

Got to the field today and that change did not do it, it go worst to a 5.22 lap time. I check rpm and it is at 8900. I think the timer somehow got reset from 100% to something lower. I am going to swap out the timer and see if that does it. Also checking the battery but this seems unlikely cause it was full charge a day ago. Only thing that has happened was that when I switched on the system the other day if failed to start so I shut off and came home seems like I had one wire that had a lose fitting plug. Will check later once I get a few house things done.

Did some bench testing and it seems that something is limiting rpm, either the timer (which is a Ztron set for full throttle 100% both start and end) or some setting in the ESC (which is set for control line mode, fixed rpm all sections set at 10K). Any ideas what could limit rpm in the ESC settings?

If you're using the same three settings for the same RPM, then I find it hard to believe the timer is the issue. Since you mentioned the ESC refused to work once, that might be where the problem lies.

You might have lost the configuration for the number of poles on the motor.

I recently had to retire an ESC because it was making the motor lose power and simultaneously causing a strange, whistling noise in the motor. I looked closely at the ESC and saw the heat-shrink plastic was wrinkled right above a component, as if it had overheated. I replaced the ESC, and everything went back to normal.

To run a definitive test, use an airplane radio controller. Set the throttle range and measure the RPM.

Just to close out this - it was the timer that got reset to something like 85% throttle. Got that fixed and now have full 10K rpm.
