CC Phoenix ESCs

Hi all!

I have recently started to look at E-CL and I have ordered a TF Nobler ARF for this project. As I really like CC products I would like to use a Phoenix ESC, but, as I intend to use a 4s pack and the ESC says max 3s with BEC. How to solve this? external BEC? The timer is a ZTron.

I have no problem with my CC Phoenix ESC running with a 4s battery and the timer (both Ztron and JMP-2). The timers draw so little current, that the power load on the internal BEC isn't an issue at all.

The reference I beileve is more in that if you are running servoes and a reciever, it will overdraw the BEC circuit when the servos and reciever are drawing current at the higher voltage. My CC 45 works fine to drive the timer.

If you contact Castle they will tell you you can run a 4S battery.  You'll have no problem with running a CC-35 on a 4S battery.  I do it all the time.

Will this be your first ECL project?  If so Welcome!

Please keep us posted on your progress.  The ARF Noblers seem to build light, making them excellent starting points for ECL, I LIKE your chances for sucess.

Yes it is my first attempt at ECL. The Nobler ARF is a light airframe so I hope its a good starting point. As I´m "Nobler crazy" I will happily add another Nobler to my CL fleet.

The setup I have bought is:
Top Flite Nobler ARF + new hardware (bellcrank and so on....)
Turnigy  TR 35-48-B 900kv, a bit low kv rating, but I will try it to begin with.
CC Phoenix 45
no battery yet, but it will be a 4s 3000-4000mah.
Ztron simple CL timer

For a battery please consider the ones i'm flying with.  They are made by PolyNoOne and have given me excellent service.  It is a 4S2P 3400mah pack that weighs 313 grams (11 oz) with connectors.  Here is a link:

Wow, what a lightwight battery, they are on the top of my battery list.
What are the size of the battery? Inches or metric doesnt matter.

You guys are the best!

Just for the record, I'm not converting from glow to electric, both have their advantages and disadvantages. However, with a silent ECL aircraft I can fly on a nearby unused soccer field.

I would recommend that you get the Turnigy SK3548-900 (as opposed to the TR3548-900).  It has a larger diameter shaft and improved magnets and bearings.

As for the Kv - well, on 4 cells this package will 'haul the mail' - The original e-Nobler that I recall (by the German flyer, whose name I can't recall  :) ) was flying on a much smaller motor and 3 cells and was reported to be at least adequate.  We (in my club) are currently flying a half dozen different planes on the Turnigy SK 3548's and the 1100 version on 3 cells will easily do the job on a Nobler.  The -900 version on four cells will be even stronger.  You are going to like it ...  a lot.

With the Arf Nobler, a 4s2500mAHr is plenty and will give you a good excess capacity. I use a 4s2100mAHr on mine.

One thing to keep in mind is the physical size of the pack. My 4s2100 pack (26mm x 33mm x 100mm and 208g or 7.3 oz) is just about the maximum (lengthwise) to stay within the Noblertank compartment. Originally I set it up for two 3s2100 packs hooked up in parallel (same cells as in my 4s2100 pack) because I wasn't sure how much power I needed. In that case I made it possible for one pack to slide back over the top of the wing while the second pack stayed in the tank compartment. I think I could have made the opening large enough for the width of my 4s pack.  You may need that option if your battery is much longer than my 100mm.

I picked up a CC 45 Phoenix ESC from them a little while back for $96.95
You could also do better on Ebay but you take your chances there.

Alan: Ok, I´ll keep that in mind. A smaller pack = a lighter pack. If ~2500mAh is enough I will happily use it.

John and William: The only problem is that I have to add 30% in vat and customs to those prices (if I´m unlucky). About 60-70% of my US ordered packages slip thru the customs without additional fees :) I have found a source in UK with (for Europe) fair prices on CC products.

All: With your help this will be great fun :D

I will try to get a really neat electric installation, I dont like the thought of having electric wires dangeling (word? spelling?) from the model.

My current setup uses a Scorpion 3020-16 motor, a FMA 4s2100AH LIPO, CC Phoenix 35A ESC (running in governor mode), and a JMP-2 timer. The prop is a 12-5 APC thin Electric and I use ~60 foot lines (eyelet to eyelet). I pull a little less than 1600 mAHrs per flight.

I am happy with the setup. Since I don't know how yours will end up, you might want to go with 2500mAHr cells to give you some extra capacity.
