Skiing (Not in Sochi)
« on: February 18, 2014, 06:12:40 PM »
It's been a heck of a winter in North America this year.  I was wondering if there are many electric skiers this season.

Other than a little cold, it was a perfect day yesterday so I ventured out with my Brodak Electric Super Clown for some flying.  8-10 inches of smooth fluffy white stuff on the field & -8C (18F).  The Dubro Park Flyer skis are the perfect size for the clown.  The coil spring for the skis was a little tight on the axle but with a little persuasion I managed to get them on.  They worked perfectly.  Smoothest take-offs and landings I've ever had.

I stored my batteries inside a cooler along with some of those microwavable heater packs to keep them warm until use.  In the summer, I usually can get two short flights out of each battery with some to spare.  In the cold there wasn't much left after the two flights.  I was wondering if I was drawing a little more current in the cold dense air.

Next time I'll clear the deep snow out of the centre of the circle before the first flight.  Trying to trample around and around in the deep snow while getting slightly dizzy because I hadn't flown for a while was a challenge.

If you haven't tried skiing yet -  give it a go.  Don't let a little snow keep you from having fun.

When it snows two inches around here they cancel school because of the awful weather.  Having it hang around long enough to actually fly off of is unheard of.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

80s today, did some flying in shorts and a T-shirt. Wheels worked just fine on the grass.

I didn't have to worry about a dandelion snagging a line or the prop hanging up in the grass.  Heck, I haven't even had to cut the grass for the past 4 months! ;D

Paul - Not possible to fly off ski-s in NY this winter. Freeze thaw rain snow the ground is covered with ice/snow the consistency of rock.  I haven't been past Flushing Meadow Park but I would curious as to how the surface is.  Neal Beekman would be the only one flying in this cold.

Paul,
The reason your batteries didn't last so long was because of the cold.  The motor wasn't drawing more ma, the cold affects the batteries and the colder they get the less ma are available.

I just ordered some skis.  I can't wait to give it a try.  The recent snow is so fluffy that I think my Super Clown may just sink, but it will be fun!

One of the coolest things about flying in the snow is doing some touch and goes.  I think I have been caught one time one some sticky snow but normally am able to go over and see the ski tracks in the snow.Landing marks look cool too.  No question if you bounced a landing or not.  Dress for weather and give it a shot.  3 years in Korea and I have not used my ski yet..........

When I want snow, I go rent it!  Here you can ski in the morning and surf in the afternoon within 50 miles.  VD~

And we haven't had a really windy day since I bought a new stunt kite.  HB~>

Hey Randy, I've been in Tuscon when it was snowing.   The same day I also seen the sun,  some rain,  some sleet and the snow.   It was also the year that I first seen snow on your mountain tops.  It was beautiful to me the scenery.  There is something about those mountains that just appeal to me.

By the way the last time I was at VSC, when we left that morning the wind was blowing more than a gale.  The first stop in Texas Canyon rest stop was sleet coming down(blowing).   We got to Las Cruces just as they shut the highway down for a dust storm.   Took the old route to Vaughan NM and kept sweating the weather.   Yes, you guys do have nice weather most of the time and I hope you have stunt weather again this year.  Look like I won't make it out again.
