Title: Carbon fiber over APC E props for stiffness?
Post by: Dennis Toth on May 23, 2019, 09:13:36 AM
Guys,
I have heard that some fliers are appling Carbon Fiber vail over the standard APC E props to increase stiffness. For those that have done this what resin did you use and did you post cure it - how?

MM,
This would be the thin electric props, when you get out to 11 - 12" diameter they are a bit flexible.

Carbon Fiber veil does not add any stiffness other than make a surface more nail scratch and banging resistant.  I have no clue why the love for this veil material that doesn't add any structural strength. There are materials out there that are a tine bit heavier and add a boat load of strength.

Me neither.

TMD,
What materials would you recommend and who is the supplier/retailer we can get the material from? I assume the reason for the CF vail is it is very light, available and if applied with something like an EPON epoxy will hold the resin which adds the stiffness. Seems if 1/4oz CF cloth were available I think it would be better. What do you think would be better?

Vail has no grain direction and the added strength comes from the epoxy you add. If you gust put epoxy and no vail the same amount of strength is added. Vail has strength resistance only for resistance from nails scratches. If the vail is used for that purpose then it is a great use for it.
There are nay materials out there that get the job done. It depends on application where you want to use it.
For spar reinforcement https://www.easycomposites.co.uk/#!/fabric-and-reinforcement/carbon-fibre-reinforcement/unidirectional-carbon-fibre/carbon-fibre-unidirectional-100g.html
For places where torsional strength is important https://cn-models.com/catalog/carboweave
also can try https://shop1.r-g.de/en/art/190263-45-20-100
Epon is good but MGS is better. The idea is to get a good quality laminating resin with low viscosity.

Lauri the original post was specific to use of vail over a prop for stiffness. And you know vail is not Spread tow Textreme or the CW-XX or "Vladimir Models" spread tow material you use in the FF gliders. What i say is use the right material for the right application. By the way nice work on the FF glider wings. I still maintain my opinion that vail only application is ding resistance. If a  million flyers are using vail for that application then they are all right.

A million flies, Traian, not flyers. What I tried to say is that s**t must be delicious. 😛

Lauri you are right. I need a translator sometimes.

Me too.
Actually, somebody should just cast a mold of such a prop, and copy it in carbon. It's not that difficult. L

Why Lauri. You can do a whole lot better from scratch. Personally I think XOAR props are best prop for electric out there. I considered making my own prop but for 12$ i get a nice prop without the fuss so why bother. I might do it in the future when I settle on a super setup.

Apc’s aren’t too bad aerodynamically, their problem is tips flexing.

I got some carbon quadrotor props from Ebay several years ago.  They appeared to be APC copies.  They were light, efficient, and made far less noise in corners than the APCs.  The source has probably disappeared, but one could search for carbon props that look like APCs.

I still remember what happened to Kennys model because of one of them props.
