Brodak Electric Super Clown
« on: April 16, 2013, 10:46:42 AM »
I am moving along slowly, trying to complete my Super Clown.  Went out to the garage the other day and decided to glue on the rear stabilizer.  The mounting surface was in bad shape, so I had to work on it to get it flat and parallel to the wing.  I went ahead and epoxied on the stabilizer, ensuring that it was at zero incidence, parallel to the wing trailing edge (both directions).  During the night I had a funny feeling about what I had done, but didn't know why.  Sure enough, when I looked at it the next morning, I realized that I had glued on the elevator, not the actual stabilizer.  It sure looks different now, but I really don't think that it will affecct flying that much.  Goes to show, read the directions several times and do not get in a hurry!

Epoxy can be easily removed with heat.  If you have a heat gun just get it close to the glue joint, it will soften quickly.  I have done this many times.

I know about that feeling you get in the middle of the night.  Don't worry about it.  I'm 66 years old and still making stupid mistakes.

When I was painting my Bearcat,  I figured with that big round cowl I could stand the model on that while I spray painted it.  Well a little gust came along and tip it over breaking the vertical stab off. In case you don't know it,  that stab is built up from 1/32 sheet with ribs inside.

I dunno Harold, if I did something like that I'd start BRAGGING that it was all to improve the cornering or something.

All serious aside, unless it is crooked I would not lose any MORE sleep over it - just git-er-done and get flying!

    Thnaks, Dennis

That was my plan all along.  Since the alignment is very good, I will leave it and fly as is.  Who knows; maybe it will fly better!

BTW -

I stumbled into another issue with the Super Clown.  The instructions in the manual for attaching the flaps refer to the use of the thin hinges that are used with thin instant glue.  The flaps in the kit are actually notched for the barrel type (Klett) plastic hinge.  My problem is that the hinge slots are very narrow.  If I open them up in order to use epoxy, there won't be much wood left for strength.
Is it possible to use this instant glue to attach the Klett type of hinge???
