Ares 59 Electric Conversion
« on: June 03, 2015, 05:00:08 AM »
I've always loved the Ares 59 ever since I saw my first one as a kid.  One of my bucket list items is to build one of my own and fly it.  I purchased a kit from Brodak and the quality is amazing.  I bought the I-Beam construction video with Bill Werwage and I'm on my way.  I want to power my Ares with a modern electric motor setup.  I am also considering using an R/C toddle control.  Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to power my dream model? Thank you!

Great choice! I'd love to see a Ares done right with electric. If I were to do one I would use an APC 10*5.8 prop,Turnigy 3536 1000kv outrunner and probably a Thunder Power 2700mah battery,Hubin FM9 timer and a Castle 45 amp speed controller. Might have to check the space available for the battery to fit.

Thanks for the input.  This looks like a fairly straight forward conversion to me.  There's plenty of room for the battery in the long nose by cutting an access hatch in the top.  The scoop in the front should be adequate for cooling the ESC.  I will delete the fuel engine mounts, build a new plywood former to mount the electric motor and construct a battery tray.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

Bob’s recommendations are all spot on.

The Brodak Universal A conversion kit (#BH-1943) was prototyped on a 59 Ares, and the instruction manual for that kit shows it going into that fuselage.  I also added some Brodak exhaust stacks which will function as air outlets.

Here’s a couple pix.
