Battery small sparks when plugging into charger?
« on: December 28, 2011, 06:33:32 AM »
Guys,
I've been flying ECL for almost 3yrs and noticed a small spark (very small not a flash) when plugging in the battery to the charger. This hasn't seemed to bother anything but I was wondering if it actually does shorten battery life or cause/contribute to the slight puffing of some battery packs?

I have sometimes plugged in the balancer first then the main plug and it seems to reduce the sparking. Anyone notice this and is there a better sequence to plug into the charger?

Best,          DennisT

And you do not see those sparks when you connect to ESC? It can be that you have dead capacitors.

It is normal, but in any case it is better to have resistor on the connectror which will charge capacitor just before connecting, 10 ohm is good number. If you will fly 6 or more cells, it quickly damage your connectors.

I don't know about the batteries and chargers for electric motors.  But, for my car battery and pit box battery, I hook up the battery first, then plug in the charger.   Even disconnecting, I do the charger first, then the battery.   But, with the new fangled batteries, I would suggest reading instructions thoroughly. I have the same.
But if I plug in in the following sequence I don't see sparks.
1 balancer cable
2 +
3 -

If I connect the + latest I see sparks.
I believe I have a B208I charger out of my head.

Greetings Robert-Jan

Came across this link for an anti-spark set-up.

These have a built in SMD resistor to prevent the spark.

That MGM system is too complicated, too many connectors, while that Jeti is OK, but I prefer connectors like shown on that MGM system, but it does not allaow those resistors like on Jeti picture ... so I simply install resistor directly on female connector like MGM picture ... simple and well working

BTW that system from Jeti is sensitive to overheating, it need carefull soldering, or it is better to cool that side of connector with resistor while soldering
