Battery construction
« on: February 04, 2010, 01:43:44 AM »
While looking through "List Your Setup" for some idea on what battery
capacity I would need to run a Scorpion 3020-890 kv motor running
an APC 11 x 5.5,I noticed that in Chris Rigotti / Resolve EP setup
it has a 4S 2P 20C 3400 mah battery,question does this mean two
batteries, 4 Cell's of 1700 mah capacity , wired up in parallel to give
3400mah?
If yes, do you buy these as a special order, and how do you manage
2 balance connections when charging?

Good question... Looks like Chris had these specially made. See http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=908662&page=17

Looks like the cells are just in parallel so charger balancer is plug is same as 4S1P

I guess Chris can tell us more.

PS Why did you want to go bigger on the battery? You mentioned earlier that you were using 80%

I believe Crist's packs are made that way--so 2 cells each are wired internally in parallel, then the 4 sets at wired up serially. So there is only one balance connector--each parallel set balance automatically, since they are always at the same voltage.

You can actually hook up in parallel a 4s2100 pack to a 4s1000 pack to make an equivalent 4s3100 pack. As the combo pack discharges, the 2100 pack will provide, automatically, about 2/3 of the total current. I sometimes think of that option if I would be in the situation of lacking 10% or so of the needed capacity. Simply attach a small light pack (500maHr for example) in parallel. That would give me 2600 mAhr (assuming I am using my "standard" 2100 packs).

Not something I would plan on doing if I could avoid it by having a 2600 pack in the first place, but it would preserve my 2100 pack investment if the occasion arose.

Yup, I asked if they could make a 4S2P pack using 1700mah cells because it would give me lighter pack.  PolyN0One said sure and I ordered 4 of them.  They only have 1 balance plug.  The pack consists of 8 1700ah cells.  2 cells wired in parallel then the 4 packs wired in series.  I have about 55 cycles on each of the 4 packs and they are still going strong.  I expect to go to over 100 to 150 cycles on them.  At 65 cycles they start becoming cheaper than using fuel.  BTW the packs weigh 11 ounces each.

OK, I have just draw up your pack construction and
now I understand the balance connection.
Also the battery straps you use on your profile's where do
you buy them?

Alan
Good idea with the booster pack,I ordered some more 2600 mah packs
to give me some buffer on the original 2200mah packs.

Thanks to both for info

Paul,  I can fix you up with all the velcro you need, I have a couple of rolls of the stuff.  ie Black, 1cm wide, double sided.

Is that what you are after?

Cheers

Hi Paul,
I get mine from the local DIY store, (Gardening section). They are the velcro straps used to attach plants etc to stakes. Available in a variety of colours to suit your paint scheme. :)
