Control Lines
« on: August 03, 2014, 02:52:30 PM »
Found some beading wire at Wally World, $6 for 100 yards and .012 diam. 7 strands stainless steel and a very thin plastic coating.
Is this the same or similar to what is used for steel line sets or is there something special about what is sold for many times the price in the model airplane world?
Has anyone used any of this for just sport flying?

.012" diameter before or after the plastic covering?  If that's for the wire inside the plastic coating then your line will be extra heavy and draggy.  If it's for the wire and the coating, then the wire itself is less than .012.

I wouldn't trust it, personally.  If you're serious about flying control line you can get 1000' of trustworthy line from MBS Model Supply for less than $30.  That'll make you about eight line sets per roll.  Or you can get stainless deep-sea fishing leader off of e-bay, if you're careful about getting the right stuff.  If you really don't want to get the real deal in metal wire, get some SpiderWire at your local fishing emporium.  The combat guys are already using it, and they seem to like it.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

McMaster-Carr also has SS 7 strand wire.  about $35 / 500 ft.

look at type 302/304.

They also have bolts, nuts and washers in all sizes.  I use all allen cap screws from McMaster-Carr.   also drills, taps, etc.  Shipping is very fast.
