Title: Ballpark RPM Numbers

I'm finally set to maiden my SV-11, but have no idea what I should use for my initial RPM figures.

Here's my setup:   E Flite 32,  Phoenix Edge Lite 75 ESC, AUW somewhere around 68 ounces.  Hubin FM-9 timer.  13 X 4.5 APC pusher prop.  63' eye to eye lines.

I don't like to fly real fast, but I want nice steady line tension, so I'm willing to adapt if necessary.  To be honest, I'm not even sure what my lap times are right now with my E Vector.

I'd start off around 9100-9200 RPM.  Frankly that ought to be just a tad "soft" and should let you sneak up on your final RPM - probably 9300-9400 range.

Do not lose any sleep over lap times; the RPM should be set to whatever it takes to power the SV through all the tricks!  (however I'll bet you end up around 5.3 or so..!)

Dennis has it right.  Though I'd start with 9500 rpm and work down.  Don't forget to set your timer to 1 minute flight times when doing trimming flights.  More importantly, don't forget to reset your timer to 5.5 minutes when done with the trimming flights.  Don't ask!

Thanks for the quick response Dennis and Crist, much appreciated.  I now have some numbers to start out with.

I have one more rookie question.

When I set up my ESC, it asked for a range of three RPM numbers.  My Hubin timer also has an RPM setting.  What is the relationship between those two settings?  Which one actually determines the RPM of the motor?  Does the Hubin have the final say and override the settings of the ESC?

If you have a FM-9 do you have the set up box too?

Go to the top of this forum and follow Norm Whittle's Cook book for your set up.  Or look at the ESC setting thread.  You should not be using the the 3 "SET RPM" settings.

As an alternative, you can set the ESC to Governor High (disclaimer: I do not have a Phoenix Edge but I think it is the same as the ICE as far as setup goes).

With the ESC in Governor High you do not need to enter the three head speed RPMs because you will  use the FM-9 in Governor New High mode which allows you to set the RPM using the FM-9 timer. This is handy at the field because you can change RPM with your FM-9 programmer and you do not have to mess with a computer and reprogramming the ESC.
