Electric Ringmaster
« on: July 14, 2012, 05:42:33 PM »
Well my Electric Ringmaster is ready for a test flight.  The 4S 3000 battery is probably too big and the 60 amp speed controller is too big but they are what I have and will do to see if the set up works.

The really cool thing in the setup is the KR V2 timer.  It was easy to setup and provides a constant 10,000 rpm with a 10-6 EP prop.  Before I test fly it I need to get a compression type prop adaptor. The setscrew one I have scares me.  Also I will add a spinner.  The motor/battery combo I have will turn a bigger prop but if the 10-6 works I will be able to install a much smaller speed controller and a smaller battery.

I know OTS hates electrics.  But all the damage you see is from a Fox 35 quiting every time I turned around.   Anyway the purpose of this setup is to learn electric stunt.  My next airplane will be a Pat Johnston's 576 Ringmaster (electric).  With it I hope to do a little stunt competition.  If I go to two stunt contest it will be my first and second in a row.   LL~

Good Luck with the set up, John.  If it works well you will know what to do with the 576.

Hi John,
You are on the right track and what you have should work fine for what you want.  I agree that your battery and speed control are a bit big but this is a learning process for you and they will work well enough for what you want. The only place that you might run into a problem is with that motor. I had one so I know the issues with them. Its a bit big too but again so what, you have it so use it.What I don't like is that shaft. They are 4mm and soft. So I would cut it down when you get your collet so that there is no excess between the collet and the motor. Then I would make sure your prop is balanced. Lastly, forget about the spinner. if there is anything even slightly out of balance it will vibrate till the shaft shears off. Good luck with your setup!!!

Hi John,

It should fly but it does look a bit over powered. I do hope that you have a Velcro pad on the  backside of that battery because it looks like an accident waiting to happen if you experience a sudden "stop"!! That battery is going smash into the motor and don't ask how I know about this!!  HB~>

I have several electric Ringmasters (three are S-1s) and I will post the specs below. I know you are going with the KR V2 governor/timer so the ESC and timer data are different but the motors, props and batteries should be appropriate for your (or anyone else's S-1 Ringmaster).

One is an RSM Old Time Legal S-1 kit build. 32 oz
One is scratch built (using RSM S-1 Old Time Legal plans as a guide). 28.5 oz

42" span
383 Sq area

Scratch built has a Scorpion SII 3014 1040KV
Castle Creations Phoenix 45 ESC (Using Control Line set RPM Governor mode.)
Rhino 4S 1750 20C or Zippy Flightmax 4S 2200 20C Battery
Will Hubin timer FM-9
APC 12-6 electric pusher cut down to 11"
60' lines (eye to eye).

RSM Old Time Legal kit built is the same as above except:
Scorpion 3014-22 motor 892 KV
(Scorpion has replaced this motor with the "new" Scorpion SII-3014-830KV)

The third is an old Ringmaster that I converted from Fox 35 Stunt power:
It has a SK3536 910KV Turnigy motor. This is a HobbyKing motor and it works just fine.

All good advice.  I will get an adaptor with a spinner nut and skip the spinner.  Also I will cut the shaft down as much as possible.  Fore sure the battery has Velcro under it.  Also for flight it will have many rubberbands added.  Will post lap time etc after first flight.

Roger that   010!

John R: looks pretty good from here.  You have some overkill on the batt & such, but those parts will serve you well on the 576 too.

At 10K RPM your Ringmaster will fly like a rocket ship.  I fly a 62 ounce plane with a 12x6.5 WEP at 8100 RPM and get 5.25 second lap time.  With a narrow blade prop the revs go up to 8900 RPM, so beware.  As has been said before you have way more battery than needed.  I fly that same 62 ounce plane on a 2600 Mha battery and still have 20% capacity left in the battery after a five minute flight.  Having said all the above it should fly well if it is not too nose heavy.  Anyway good luck, have fun and by all means let us know how things turn out.

I suppect that 10K is too much.  With the KR timer it will be easy to dial it down.

I just finished a static 5 minute test run.  Every thing remaind slightly warm to cold.  The recharge took 1287 mah so the 3000 pack is way over kill.  If the Ringmaster survives the first flight I will order 4S 2000 or so.
