More Phoenix 45 problems
« on: August 22, 2010, 09:40:22 AM »
While flying yesterday, I had my motor spool down in the middle of a flight.  I assumed I put in a battery that wasn't charged and hit low voltage cut off.
Put another battery in, turned it on.  The esc did it's normal beeps until after the three that are the same.  Then nothing.  It should go through another set and start the motor.
I've switched to a new Phoenix 45, I've changed timers, I've changed motors and I've changed batteries.  After the three beeps, the esc has a constant flash.
I've hooked it up to my castle link, and it shows normal.
Any ideas?

Hi Robert,
Do you know what the battery voltage was immediately after the flight?
Was the battery too hot to hold?
How much capacity did you put back in, compared to the capacity?
How is the low voltage cutoff in your ESC set?

we need more input,
Dean P.

Battery was fine after the flight and still had 3000mah left in it.  I've changed to two other batteries and still nothing
on any motor, no matter which speed controller I use or timer.  I plugged in the esc to Castle Link to look at the setting and all appears
normal.  What could have changed?

Robert,

Check your motor wires and connectors (if you use them). Make sure that the motor windings and connecting wires are intact. If you have tried a new ESC and had the same results it points to the motor or possibly the timer. But you say that you have tried different motors, ESCs and timers!! I'd be about ready to give up!

You do not say what ESC settings you are using. If you are not already using "Control line mode governor set RPM," try that setup. Be sure you have the correct motor and battery settings in the ESC.

Also Castle Creations may have a trouble shooting FAQ on their WEB site and I have heard that their personnel are also helpful. Give them a call.

Good luck.

I think I found the problem.  Bad timer.  I switched timers, but they're not the same.  I plugged into the wrong port.  The newer timer
now works every plane I have, providing I'm plugged into the right port.
I just flew in Albuquerque last week with no problems.  First flight back home, the problems start.
For once I had Good timing.

Hi again Robert,
Like John said ... let me add one thing, though.
Try re-arranging the wiring, especially in getting the control cable as far from the high-current motor wires as possible. Even if you have to do something that looks ugly, in order to get the timer and control wire away from the high-current path, it is worthwhile for the experiment. The motor drive wires can induce noise into the ESC control signal which the ESC will correctly interpret as being illegal (not a nice clean 1 ~ 2 millisecond long pulse 20 times a second) and shut down the motor for safety reasons. The control cable should be dressed to leave the ESC at right angles to the battery input wires. Shame they have exit right next door to them!

let us know how it goes,
Dean
