Very interesting! Two questions:
How well do the "drag strips" work, and do they allow longer lap times?
How many of the planes use a gyro?
I am just starting to experiment with one.
I have a 26" span flat foam plane I am flying indoors on 15' lines.
I will add the gyro next flying session.
-
If I remember well, then 2 models had gyro, but now we use newer system with accelerometer (in 3 models) ... you can see it is in action on that older video from the same gym:

Igor,
How much extra lift or wing area do you you think you are getting from the wing and landing gear supports? You rdesign certainly does do amazingly well on those 15 foot lines. Were those drag devices added to help control the speed or just as an experiment? I know they are very popular with those flying indoor 3D aerobatics, as are the side force generators.
Have you also experimented with a model with a more conventional configuration like the models that we fly in our outdoors activity? IE, the coupled flaps and elevator.
I am thinking about taking a n electric powered1/2A Pathfinder indoors. We have a dome that is 75 feet high, so the 50 foot lines should present not problem.

Yes, those parts supporting landig gears and also top of wing are designed as part of flying area, so it is triplane to some extent. I did not inted to play with flaps because of several reasons:
1/ they are not necessary, you can have so much area as you want, flaps are necessary outside to limit wind and turbullence influence, but indoor we have always calm ... but the result is jumping model if someone open doors LL~ however we can manage them closed ;D
2/ low RE number dictates flat airfoil which is resistent to low Re numbers, but flat airfoil does not like flaps, for LE separation is enought deflected flap also at 0 AoA, so it does not make sense
3/ flaps need enoug line tension, but those models at so low speed has so low line tension, that they cannot handle flaps
those brakers help in descending legs of square figures, flat wing does not have enough drag and such a model without them falls like a rock, those brakers are visible advantage
side force gerataors (also landing gears are part of them) and also well desighed side area of fuselage is also very important, becaus unlike outdoor models on long lines, it is the only tool which can keep positive line tension overhead - if you do the math, you will see that centrifugal force at 5s/lap on 15ft lines is far less than gravity
I recommend to do such model on so short lines it is eye opening thing - you will immediatelly see all issues of tethered flight like pforce, precession yeawed flight etc VD~

Igor
Are the accelerometers available ready to install or did someone create them from parts?
I am truly amazed at the 5 sec lap time! With my conventional 3D flat foam plane and 15' lines the lap time must be around 3 sec - very fast.

I use small boards connected to one small PIC, the harware is not big problem, the heart is in software, little bit black magic :-)))) ... but you can see it already works after 4 years development :- ))))))))))) ... still not perfect, but works
-
Hi Igor, you should say...."Another GB R-3 Indoor week-end"! This is getting like F2C now.......all flying one model. VD~ (Just kidding!)
-
xexe ... kidding, but you can see 13 airplanes there, so now it was little bit different than 3 years ago, when all wanted to fly my model ;D
and next weekend is another contest in gym near Hradec Kralove (2 gyms = 4 circles) ... I told you ... come and you can borrow model, no problem ... so far they have registered 30 flyers :- )))))
-
I was coming........but my kids need the Lear jet that week-end...............maybe next time! #^
Jokes aside, that looks like good fun Igor. Thanks for posting the photo.

I was give an R/C 3D foam plane at the AMA convention to build and convert to Control Line electric. The plane is just about finished, just need to add a power system at controls. They claim 10 ounces when complete for R/C, but they don't make any recommendations for motor or ESC. I would think something in the 70-100 watts would be enough, but any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.
Andy

Great .. I hope we will see a video :- ))))
Yes ~60W motor is OK, we use special motor for this, in weight 32g, if you want chip chinese motors, you will need something in weight up to 40g
you will need a motor with kv~=1200-1400 with internal resistance up to 150mohm. Battery is 800mah for 5 minutes. I charge back aproximately 550mah. Take esc with governor, I recommend Jeti Spin 11, but also CC 10 will work. Timer as small as possible. Prop is GWS 10x4.7 RPM=4500 on 5m long lines.

Great Igor, thanks for the help.

and yet another great contest ... 2 days (12 hours) , one gym with 2 circles one for beginners, one for F2b ... next year I hope also semi scales :- ))))

Hi Igor,
Congrats on your win.....again! That looks like such good fun, so well done to all of you guys on organizing this. It can only be good for C/L. Thanks for the link to all of the photos as well. Looks like everybody is enjoying themselves.
Were you all flying on 5 metre lines? Some look longer but that it most likely just the perspective from the camera. Was anybody using thread lines or were they all thin steel?

Thanx, yes it is ESPECIALLY fun. I had 3 models there ... so one was still free for you ... you have to move to north africa, it will be closer for nexyear flying to Pardubice :-))))
Yes, we all use 5m lines, it is easier to know if we fit (if one fits, all others as well), easier to copy power train, tip weight etc. Lines are from green "spiderwire" fishing line, I do not know what is exactly the material, but elongation under loar is aproximately like steel cable of the same thickness and strength is far over our need. I think the thickness is 0,14mm and they are insensitive to wrong handling.
And we tested another thing ... the guy making those kits provided "repair kit" for broken noses ... so we were able to make quick repair with Pawel Dziuba ... after "little harder power landing" :-))) ... model was repaired in 20 minutes ... like new :- ))))))
... so the happy owner was able to continue in the contest and to do good result :-)))))
-
: ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Yes yes, that me ;P : ) i sucssefully crashed the model about 4 times / somehow my brain can not send to my hand right signal - made loop and wingover normally / but i had support team : )))) and they fix it quickly / especially that one Pavel Dzyba with two couple glasses / :PP : )
And Keith, honestly : ))) I was on last place in the contest of beginers, but thankfully to Pavel Macek, i got some pricess : ))) Which i accept like huge present for me ; ) and made me happy : )))))
Thanks also to Igor, about patience to resist on all my crashes : ))))))) the final rezult : )))) 1 wingover - perfect, loop - good, low fly - also good, horizontal fly - perfect, 45 degreese - verry well, take off - perfect, and landing - at least crashes ; ))))) PERFECT :PPP : )))))))))))))))))))))))))

NOOOOOOOO she was NOT last .... fortunately we have proof of that: http://pavel.macek.hk/2012/GBC2/Results.pdf
that last 100 point flight was enough :-))))
... well ... just to explain - Tania likes to repair old models, she posted some pictures of her work, she do not fly, so I convinced her to try flying in gym and this was her SECOND day of flying ... she has less than 20 flights right now (first 9 was 1 munet long - just to learn takeoff and landing) ... and she can do wingovers and loops :-)))) ... I cannot say that I was able to learn it so quick :-))))
and those 4 crashes she means in her life, not in that contest :- )))))

Attila did a video from my last contest flight :)

Igor
This looks like so much fun. I really wish I could get some interest here in So. Cal. USA for a contest like that. I am taking my CL Foamy to the club meeting tonight. I tried flying it this past Saturday on 30' (10 meters) lines, with just a mild breeze. Mistake on my part, did a little damage to the one wing tip. Fortunately I flew on grass. It's back together and ready to fly, but now I am waiting for an indoor venue and 15' (5 meters) lines per Igor's recommendation. I learned my lesson, never second guess a world class flyer. y1
You guys are remarkable Igor, good luck and keep flying. By the way, do you have plans available for the GeeBee? I like the looks of it, and the engineering work has been done. :D

:) greate video and nice fly :P Igor : )) hehehe : )))))

Hmm, yes Andy, I can imagine, that plane is sensitive to any air movement. It is flyable outside only in absolutely calm air. We tried it, but the result was the same.
BTW, plan was posted by Jose Oterino in this thread: http://stunthanger.com/smf/index.php?topic=19265.0
I think this link will work: http://www.jpaeromodels.com/planosvuelocircular/electricos/Gee%20Bee_cl/geebee_cl.pdf

Tania, I hope next year you fly F2b class :- ))))

OK ; ) My first video : ) from training fly : ) as i promissed
Instructor Igor Burger :P : )))

-
:- ))))) ... you had better show the last flight in day, not the first, so we could see some wingovers and loops :- )))))
... but I forgive you that you tried to terrorize me by that low flight ~^ ... next time I will jump instead of lay on floor VD~
-
With all the noise of the motor how could she hear you?? LL~ LL~ LL~ Next time sit in the center of the circle with her. My grandaughter who has been flying the longest says that looks like fun. H^^
-
hihihi ; ) i can hear him from evrywhere : ) simple just ignore the other voices and sounds : ) mmmm in real was not like that, that noise comes also from the camera and bad quality : )))))))and yes : ))) you're definatly not the only one who feel fun and joy :P :)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) n~ LL~
