Big Jim Banshee Build
« on: August 09, 2017, 09:10:29 AM »
We decided to build a tribute plane for our friend Jose Modesto. This plane is a Big Jim modified Banshee and is from the early seventies and anyone who flew at Flushing Meadow Park during those days knows this plane. It was Pink! And flown by a very large man! Hopefully it will bring back some memories for a few people.
So, my oldest two boys Joseph and Steven decided they wanted to build one and this a team build for them. It should be interesting. Unfortunately, there are no photos of this plane, however Jose had notes with all the numbers and mods from Big Jim. The only difference is they are using electric not a Fox 35 on missile mist!
We decided to start a build thread to document the process. We will see how it goes!

Keep the pictures coming.  This should keep them out of trouble.   I heard my Dad tell some one when asked why he let me spend all my money and time on model planes.   His response was, "At least I know where I can find him".   I was either in my bedroom building or out in the back running engines if not flying in the hay field.  Did not know about KCK's City Park at the time. Cool build, I can't wait to see what a "Big Jim" Banshee looks like.

The pink Banshee, originally mine, was used to learn many things, and was used to test engines up to a K&B 40. It had 4 or 5 sets of flaps, multiple tail locations, and even a radial motor mount. Findings were used to design the first Pattern Master air frames.

Thank you guys for reviving the most important model for me.
This model was my introduction to Big Jim.
In the early 1970 the stars of our Park were Bob(Champione) Lampione and Gene Schaffer and the great Vic Macalluso. There models were absolutely gorgeous. These were top Nats competitor, with mirror finishes and intricately applied details.WOW.
Then Big Jim comes on the seen with his very well finished "PINK" modified Banshee. The model has a completely rubbed finish with Halh ribs from spar forward ( it looks like an Ibeam ) the shine from the rib pattern were amazing. BTW I'm 15 years old
The fuel tank is painted pink to match. Banner 1/7/8" racing wheels, movable lead outs and adjustable tip weight .
The Banshe was a full competition Profile.
Up to that point I had never seen a profile that could fly that well.
Wen the motor stoped that's wen the fun began, Jim would wind fly the Banshee through rounds, squares, eights land and continue to whip model back to speed.  Note: Bob Lampione and Gene Schaffer would wind fly their nats models. They had big ones. And very talented pilots.
