Active timer with accelerometer and power control
« on: April 18, 2013, 12:01:23 PM »
Hello,

I went and red manual on this little jewel.  It seems as though it can setup very precisely.

My question is does the device settings need to be changed when the wind chamges?

How many times have you flown round one in the morning in 0-3 variable winds only to come back fly round two in the afternoon with the winds at 10+.  It would seem a little more accleration and more decleration could be valuable in the changing conditions.

I was thinking if in fact these things do need a change in the above situation would it be easier to carry three of these things in your flight box.  One setup with parameters for 0-5 winds, one set for 5-10, and one for 10+.  Then if you are at a contest and it changes you just plug a new one in.

The way Darryl has his running the bottom of the plane the access would be so simple.  Unplug one plug another one in.

Am I thinking along the right track here?

Brand?  Is this Igor Burger's thing?

I thought you flew slime power!

Increasing response may just make your plane even more unpredictable in gusts.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Yes this is Igor's thing.

Yes I fly IC but it doesnt mean I cant follow along and learn, right?  Need to know what the competition is doing.

Igor mentioned something in a thread about six months ago about not using inertial measurements (accelerometers and gyros) any more.  He didn't say what he does, but there seems to be a lot of success out there by folks that are just using a dead steady speed throughout the run.

I still want to try a helicopter governor on a glow engine.  Better, I want someone else to go to all the expense and effort, then report back on their success!

Doug, if we get to make it to Dallas in June you are welcome to put in a flight on my model with the active timer.  I'll either have the Geo or hopefully I'll have finished my new Impact by then.

Doug,
I'm no expert but when I find the rpm setting on my Hubin timer that my plane performs its best I leave it alone. If it's too windy I don't fly. If it's dead calm we deal with the same bowling balls that IC setups deal with, I tried a Hubin timer with a +/- 250 rpm potentiometer, but found it unnecessary. But if you are in need of adjusting the rpm(maybe trying a different prop) just connect the programming box to the timer and change the setting.

I do not change settings regarding wind. I do not change ANY setting for wind, as my friend Marphy always changes wind right after the take off  n~

However I never needed such difference, I set it for wind and I can live with such setting in calm day.

How many times have you flown round one in the morning in 0-3 variable winds only to come back fly round two in the afternoon with the winds at 10+.  It would seem a little more accleration and more decleration could be valuable in the changing conditions.

I would say it is just opposite, I think calm day will accept stronger regulation.  It is just like with IC engines, while jurassic 4-2-4 engines with nice and strong switch will fly nicely in calm, they will tend accelerate in wind in low positions ... while piped engines with well and precisely limited rpm by internal structure of pipe (baffles, cones) are signifficantly better in wind (compared with 4-2-4).

I was thinking if in fact these things do need a change in the above situation would it be easier to carry three of these things in your flight box.  One setup with parameters for 0-5 winds, one set for 5-10, and one for 10+.  Then if you are at a contest and it changes you just plug a new one in.

No, you not need 3 pieces, IF you want different setting for different conditions, you need just table with proper settings. You can somply set different setting in relation to conditions just before flight. It is programmable by small box plugged between ESC and timer and you modify settings - question of seconds.

I usually do not set anything, but in Bulgaria I flew practice flights early morning (9 degrees C) and official flight on strong sun (something around 40 dge C) and that dry air did my flight quicker morning and slower afternoon, so I rather set lap time little bit regarding temperature. But on local contest in more stable temperature I not need to change anything whole year.

Hmm I do not know exactly what you mean and what exactly I wrote, but reality is that I USE accelerometer (at least in that laters timer). I tested and used several other solutions, but this is what I actually use - by the other worlds, most sucessful for me so far.

Pay him no attention Igor.  Tim is the purveyor of bad information.

Tim, Doug and I are still flying IC but if you think that we do not study EVERYTHING that our competition is doing you are sadly mistaken. You never know, Doug and I might just have an entire electric fleet that nobody knows about...

Igor,

Thank you for the response.  That tells me alot about what you have working.  Good enough to just leave it alone and fly.  That's what I shoot for too.  Every once in a while I actually find it too....   :D :D

Jason,

If the weather is decent I will take you up on that offer for sure!!!  I have seen your gear in action at the last Nats and it was working really good then, if its even better I would love to get a ride on it.

Yep, always have to keep up with the latest updates so the "secret" fleet is at its best!!   ;D ;D ;D

I like it when the Current US Nats champ and current W/Ch go head to head in an "ELC vs IC who's is better debate..."

I don't think Doug is debating.  He just wants to learn what's happening so he can continue to beat us.

OK Igor & Tania, I would really like help, I'm already ordering Max Bee plans from P.A.M.P.A.  what do I need from Igor, i.e.  timer, ESC, accelerometer,&motor (what exactly do I buy& from where) and how much does it all cost?  Please just send me a personal message with the information.

Thanks in advance, James

I think it would be nice to see the most recent total setup from prop to battery that the current WC is running!!!

Maybe Igor has a computer in the plane with revolutionary new AI system. Maybe he has Star Trek like sensors all over the plane that feed information to the AI and can adjust to the most minute changes in atmospheric pressure, temperature, wind and motion.

Yea, that's it.

I did not change anything since then:

11x5 3 blade carbon prop
AXI 2826/13
Jeti Spin 66
6s 2600mAh Nanotech 25C Lipo
Active timer with accelerometer

that is what I use since 2011 till now
