A123 new charger for 15min charge
« on: December 19, 2007, 02:53:18 PM »
I just saw a post for a new parallel charger for A123 cells that will charge 3s-2p and 4s-2p packs in around 15mins. Here is the web site: http://www.rcpilot.eu/ they claim they can charge up to 12 cells at 10C. Starts to make the benefits of the A123's outweigh the weight draw back.

Also Dean & Igor on the LiFe battery thread have given me a direction on the motor that should work with the 9.9v for the A123 3s-2p pack, that being a AXI 2820-8 with a 11.5x5.5 to a 12x6 prop.

best,     Dennis

Doing a little searching the Thunder Power RC TP610C charges up to 6s at 10amp for A123 @ $129 vs the one on rcpilot at $179 seems like the TP will work it also includes a built-in balancer.

Hi Dennis,
That looks good. The funny thing is that FMA used to offer an A123 version of their BalancePro 10A charger, but I no longer see it listed. I guess that it's been discontinued in favor of a new CellPro 10S capable / 10A charger. Oh well.

later,
Dean

That's great Igor,
I have been using a pair of the old BalancePro chargers for my 10S F3A work for almost 2 years now, and the addition of the CellPro-like display and A123 compatability will be excellent. I'm especially pleased to see the "low temperature" mode. All (and I do mean all) the other chargers out there assume that full charge is 4.20 V. There is no such thing as an electro-chemical cell that has a fully-charged open circuit potential that does not have non-zero temperature cooefficient. When I spoke to the designer at FMA last year at the WestChester Radio Aeromodellers (WRAMs) show, he told me that he could not even get this information from the battery suppliers, and he was forced to measure a wide variety of batteries over temp, for himself! Yes, the FMA booth at the show is right next to the booth for Flying Models Magazine, every year, so we get to talk.

Time to spend more money!

 S?P ....  >:D

all that data was measured day at 10 deg C. It is relatively cold, but battery was charged just few minutes before the flight (advantage of A123) and battery was sealed by polystyrene foam with only little chance of cooling  VD~ ... I did whole 4 flight contest that way (and won)  #^
