Gotcha SX 460
« on: August 29, 2012, 07:00:24 PM »
Going to try to go with electric with this. It has 400 sq, air frame 13oz. The other one I built is 24oz ready to fly with 25 fox. This is to fast for stunt trainer, may try a fp20. I have been try to get a package together for electric. I think a 480 would be fine, but I dont know. there is a lot of different KV out there. If someone could give me some help on size, kv, batteries. Bob Hunt help me on the RD-1 that Samantha is building, 400" Stunt ship. Know that she has a charger and power supply, maybe she let me use it and I will try this one for myself.

Thanks Steve

Hi Steve
Don't know what components Bob advised you on, but the power set-up for the RD-1 should work fine on a Gotcha.

I just finished off a Shark 402 that uses the Super Clown power system from Brodak.  It will turn from a 9" to 11" prop (10x5 would be best for this app)  The motor is robustly constructed, the 3S battery is long and THIN so it tucks into a pocket in the wing nicely.  The motor is designed to be mounted from the front, a bit of a PITA on a profile but doable.

http://brodak.com/electric/electric-parts/electric-power-package-for-planes-equal-to-19-to-35-engine-size-does-not-include-plane.html

BTW, Brodak is selling batteries 2-1 now so that could get you into a couple extra packs pretty easily.

The same motor in a lower KV is also available from Brodak.  The (BH-1843) needs a 4 cell pack, that would be hard to tuck into the wing but might work if you can remove the foam forward of the spar without causing the wing to fall off. (do not know how the Gotcha is constructed)

There are similar sized plug-n-play packages available from RSM, I'm sure Andy Borgogna can help you with those.

You asked about kv & cell count.  I have simplistically observed that it the product of the KV x Cell count totals between 3600 & 4500 you are probably OK.  That means if you are using a 4 cell pack then you need a 900-1100 kv motor.  If you are using a 3 cell pack then you need a 1200-1500 KV motor.

Please share which 480-class motor you have in mind and folks here should be able to help you close the deal...

Went with a e-flight 15 and 2700 4s. There are e-flight,480-910,480-1020, 10-1000  turnigy 480-1020, 480-850, 10-810, 10-1200  all 2s-3s
Turnigy D2836/9-950, D2836/8,1100 all 2s-4s

Dont know if 4cell would be better or not.

I got these planes at brodac $49 and I tend to land hard in the middle of a flight. I dont want to put to much money in these. The guys I fly with have been using these and they fix easy. The guys using these have came a long way and can fly most of the pattern. They are only using there nicer plane for what they can do now and trying new things with the gotcha's.

I think I should be able to get this to fly as good a fox 35, FP 20, 25 that they use.

Thank Steve

GOOD CHOICE!

The Power 15 is a kv=950, making it a very good match for 4S.  It will equate to a 35-40, meaning a 10"-11" prop, also meaning you can later use it in a "classic" sized full stunter it so desired.  The 2700 pack should be comfortably sized too.

Mounting the motor from the front(the end the wires come out of?) is a must for a sport/trainer plane that is very likely to crash.  Greatly lessens the chance of bending something in the motor when the prop hits the ground.

For sprightly performance I'd recommend something around 600+ watts with 4 cells and a 8/4 in. prop or 3 cells on a 9/4-5 prop.  or go to a lower voltage battery or smaller prop to keep things in hand.
