Switching an old model question (Maple motor mounts)
« on: September 14, 2012, 03:07:52 PM »
OK, Guys, how have y'all gone about removing the maple motor mounts?

Then what do you do to mount the elec. motor?

Thanks!

Hi Bill:

I just use a Permagrit drum sander, put on a mask and have at it. The smell is awful and the dust is a pain, but it only takes about 10 minutes to remove the maple mounts.

I'm attaching a few photos here that make up an essay of sorts without words showing the process. Note that the first couple depict the early setup that had a rear bearing support for the front mounted motor. We found that not necessary...

That Permagrit sander is great!  Much much better than the old sandpaper cylinders - eats through maple like a hot knife through butter. Emphasis on "hot", but it doesn't get as hot and burn the wood as badly as the sandpaper.

I have a wide array of the permagrit tools, I don't know how we managed without them.

Permagrit drum sander ?  Is this something used in a Dremel tool ?  What is a good source for these ?

A big thank you to Bob and all.  I will go about getting some more of the PermaGrit sanding drums, etc,.

What is the recommended firewall thickness for the front mount?  This is for a ".35-.40" equivalent electric system.

Thanks, again!

I use 1/4" for anything over a .40 size motor, some will say it's overkill but I have never had a failure.

Thanks, Andy!

The only electric "system" I now have is a front mount motor.  Guess I just need to make a really *thick* nose ring.

Bob Hunt has some really cool-looking fiberglass/epoxy motor mounts.  It's 1/8" and predrilled for the motor: all you need to do is get it attached solidly to your airframe.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Thanks for the info, Tim.  I'll have to get with Bob as to just what I need to do.

Hi Bill
Bob Hunt does have some very nice motor mounts for front mounting.  Depending on what kind of motor you have you may be able to reverse the prop shaft in the bell and rear mount the motor.  The motor pictured in the PT-19 was originally a front mount that I reversed.   What type of motor do you have?

Hi Andy,

The motor is an Arrowind (came in Brodak Super Clown package) and is a front mount as is.

Thanks!
Bill
