Title: 3S setup? Can anyone help?
Post by: James Strickland on October 09, 2012, 12:53:05 AM
Hi All, I already have many 3S 2200mah packs along with a phoenix 35 esc due to the fact I've flown elec. r/c heli's for a long while, can anyone tell me if there is a 3S setup that I can use my current 3S 2200 mah batts & phoenix 35 esc in a ringmaster that will work? or would the motor wind up being too small in order to get the power & flight time I'll need in a ringmaster?

Hi James,
2200 mah might come up a bit short if you want to complete the full F2B pattern but should be fine to get you through the OTS schedule.

I run a Ringmaster S1 and use a Phoenix 35 with 3S 2300 mah and that's plenty for the OTS pattern and 6 laps or so at the end.

I've used a variety of motors including the Scorpion 3014 series (1187kv) and also the EMAX/Arrowind 2815 1100KV. Both have plenty of power for a Ringmaster. I have also flown the model with an EMAX GT2812, EMAX GT2215 and EMAX 2810. The weight saving using these motors was welcome but they are in my opinion a little short on power if it's anything more than light winds.

My Ringmaster weighed in at 28oz originally but 2 years down the line and a few repairs later it's up around 31oz but the 3014 and 2815 haul it round with authority and are still cool at the end of the flight.

TTFN
John.

The Brodak Super Clown uses a 3Sx3300 pack for a 6 minute flight - 3Sx2200 sounds like about 2/3rds or a 4 minute flight - pretty much what John H said.  Also, the 3300 pack weighs around 8.75 oz, I'd guess your 2200's weigh about 6 oz, that is roughly a 10% weight save for the Ringmaster RTF.

I would recommend a 9x4.5EP prop, and a 2815 class motor with kv of 1300-1500.

If you go by the 7 watts/ounce rule, and leave yourself 20% worth of charge at the end of the flight, then you've got enough battery for a 28 ounce plane.

It's probably better to plan on 25oz, so it can get a bit heavier during the build and during any repairs.

That's really, really light for a Ringmaster.  I'm not sure just what would come out to that weight, but that's what you want to aim for.

Well Hi John, Dennis, and Tim,  Thank you all very much for your info inputs. I'm glad to hear that I'll be able to run a motor powerful enough to drag it around properly, just a bit shorter flight.  I know the right thing to do is to use a "bigger" battery; I just want to be able to take advantage of the batteries that I already have quite a few of.----Thanks again my friends.

Plug it into a timer.

Isn't there something you have to do to a Heli ESC to make it work for CL?

MM

You probably are referring to the older Heli ESC's that would automatically turn OFF the brake function if put in "heli" or governor mode.  That doesn't apply to the Phoenix 35 that the OP mentioned.
