2 ESC 1 Timer
« on: November 15, 2024, 07:22:16 AM »
Can a single simple timer control multiple ESC's?  I know the Fiorotti can control two with separate connections.  I want to know if a single connection can control multiples.

Hi KC
I have successfully used single timer with non-governing "Sport" ESC's (Brodak 1/2A size F-82) and with Castle ESC's (Pathfinder Twin) in full governing "Set RPM" Mode.  Doubt you can do that with Active timers since the timer effectively IS the governor and individual control would be required.

Per Will Hubin, If both ESC's are connected to a single timer it is imperative that you have the timer powered by only one ESC.  To do that you connect the timer via a "Y" harness to the ESC, BUT on one side of the "Y" you must disable one of the POWER wires; indeed, only the signal wire is required. On the F-82 I simply clipped the positive wire, on the PF I pulled the positive pin out of the socket and folded it back. See Pix.

Wil Hubin also introduced a "Twin" version of the FM-9 Timer where both ESC's plug into the timer.  It has a Pot that lets you add or subtract RPM to one channel if you wish to have one motor turn a little faster or slower than the other.

....

That depends on the active timer.

No to a K.R. timer, because it actively governs the motor speed.

Yes to a Burger timer, because it sends out a motor speed command and trusts the ESC to govern the motor.

I don't know if the Fioretti timers regulate motors, so I can't speak to them.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.
