.15 sized C/L
« on: March 05, 2007, 09:26:26 AM »
Has anyone electrified smaller stunt/sport C/L planes?  Specifically, I would like to put electric in a Magician .15.  It weighs 7 oz ready to cover right now.  I guess that it will weigh 1 pound with all gear, but won't know till I do more.  Wing area is 250 sq in.  From what I have been reading, I need 125 to 150 watts for this size plane.  Is this the general place to start?  Battery wise, I don't need to fly for 7 minutes, because I don't participate in contests, just sport (fun).

Thanks,

Larry Lake

Hi Larry,
If your still interested here are a few suggestions. We didn't mean to ignore you (at least I didn't), I just didn't have time to run the numbers.
I will assume your airplane ready for the power system will be 9oz. If your target weight is 16oz then 150 watts should be a good starting point. To get 150 watts you will need to draw ~20amps from a 2S pack, or you can draw ~13.5 amps from a 3S pack. Since the smaller motors don't like the high amp draw (relative to their size) I will go with the 3S pack.
Again I will assume you are flying on 52' lines with a lap time close to 4.8 seconds, which in turn is ~46mph.
If the above is correct then the following power systems should be a good match.
The only variable is the motor. The same battery, ESC and timer can be used for all the power systems.

Battery 1: Thunder Power 910mah 3S 2.3oz .625" x 1.312" x 2.562" flight duration will be ~3.5min @ 12amps (max current draw 14.5amps)

Battery 2: Thunder Power 1320mah 3S 3oz .750" x 1.375" x 2.562" flight duration will be ~5.25min @ 12amps (max current draw 17amps)

ESC: Castle Creations Phoenix-25 .6oz

Timer: Your choice, JMP or Z-Tron 2 grams

Motor 1: Mega (16-7-12) 1.7oz 7x5 @ 11,800 rpm @ 10.5amps 117watts
                                            8x5 @ 10,300 rpm @ 13.5amps 150watts

Motor 2: AXI (2208/26) 1.6oz 7x5 @ 11,400rpm @ 10amps 111watts
                                           8x5 @ 9,700rpm @ 12amps 133watts

If everything above is true it looks like the AUW will be about 14.5oz max. At that weight you will need ~135watts. As you can see the power systems mentioned will have a good range of power (100-175watts). You can adjust prop dia., pitch, line length and throttle % to get even closer to the desired performance.
I did this very quickly so I only gave you two choices. Everything is brand name and can be substituted with any generic brand to save money. People who e-mail me usually get 4-5 or more choices (if I have the time). There are literally hundreds to choose from. If you would like more info/discussion ask away.

Mike, I affraid tne Mega 16/7/12 will not last long time at 10A. Better chice will be longer version 16/15/7. I used it on .15 sized model with 3 cells and electric prop 9x6 (thin "APC" like tips so it effectively smaller than 9"), but it is also not the best choice. But in any case it is easy to install to such model with 3x Kokam 2000 converted from profile .15 IC model.

here is how I did it:

I tried to find some setup, but the best I found is better for bigger model - motor PJS 1400 3 cells 2200 20c cells. It is in larger moder 800g heavy (29oz) span 1200mm (47") folding prop 10 x 6 also with thin tips

here is short flight video:

Igor,
You may be right about the Mega 16/7/12. Mega states a maximum of 24 round cells and a maximum of 6amps. When it comes down to it, if you have enough cooling it will be fine. (a side note I have pushed Mega's well past their limits with good luck, and I also figured current draw would drop in the air) I was also considering ground clearance. I guess you can modify the gear/wheels to fit a larger prop, but it might look funny?

In any case it is up to Larry. If he needs nose weight the 16/15/x (2.7oz) will help the situation. The 16/15/6 will give you slightly more rpm than the figures I listed and the 16/15/7 will give you slightly lower rpm figures.

Thanks for the pictures and videos Igor. Your model is much bigger than the Magician .15, about the size of a Twister.

   Keep us posted Larry, Mike

Congrats Larry!!!

I had read your previous post and was going to ask for more info. I am glad you gave us more details along with a picture!!!  ;D

Two suggestions. Try .012" braided lines and possibly an APC-E prop. I have no experience with the GWS props, but an APC-E may give you a little more performance.

Keep us updated.

I tried a 7x5 APC E prop, and two washers of out thrust and it improved line tension.  I will get some .012 braided lines and I think that will help too.  Lap times with this setup are 5.2 sec on 49' lines.
