1/2A Sig Skyray
« on: August 02, 2012, 12:42:43 PM »
Picked up a Skyray kit a few weeks ago and wondered what motor, ESC and battery for it.  Looked at both of the Stevens Aeromodeling planes and wondered which would be the best but also wondered about HobbyKing motor would work also.  Am close to placing a battery order anyway from HK so could just include a couple of extra pieces when I do.

Take a look at my post in List Your Set-up: http://stunthanger.com/smf/index.php?topic=12044.msg155296#msg155296

I have since replaced the timer with Clancy Arnolds U/Tronics throttle control (a much safer way to fly, IMHO)

Two motors I like for small 1/2A’s like the SIG Skyray are AX-2306N-2000 and the Turnigy 2730-1700.  Both draw about 7-8 AMPS on a 3s battery. The AX turns a 5x3at 18K, The 2730 isn’t quite as powerful, I normally fly it with a 6x4 at 13K. Both are available from Hobbyking.

I've used them with timers or u/tronics and 12a ESC.

Thanks for the feedback.  Going to order some more stuff in the next few days (need some more helicopter batteries) and will get one of the listed motors to try.

I just received my 1/2A Sig Skyray today.  I ordered it intending to convert it to electric.  I have an e-flight timer on the way, as well as a motor and controller from Ebay.

I have been plugging various values into this handy worksheet calculator

These calculators are useful, I use Motocalc. But be careful, they really are tuned for RC. They don't factor line drag which leaves a CL model a bit under powered.  Motocalc actually tries to simulate the plane in flight. I am not familiar with Ecalc but it may do the same kind of calculation

PS You won't go wrong with either the Ax or turnigy I mentioned earlier. with the eflight timer, 500mah 20-25c 3s, and a 12A esc would work well

69 grams before paint.  I think this might come in under 100g, maybe.

I ordered a 50w 1400kv motor (axi 2204/14 which is supposed to be the same as 2204/54), 18A esc, and some 6x3e propellers from ebay (still on slow boat from China).   I need a battery still (and a charger, but my neighbor is willing to charge my batteries for the test flights).  According to the calculator I linked with a 850mAH 3 cell lipo I should get 10 minutes total air time, or 2-3 shorter flights per charge.

If the finished mass of the bare model is 100g I get a 1.4:1 power to weight ratio, so that should fly well.  I'll have an .049 version of the sig skyray (I think, been a few years) to compare to.  My brother is supposed to be collecting two of my old airplanes from our parents house to bring out.

Hope it works out. 50 watts sounds a bit light. My Skyfire flies at about 76 input watts but the losses bring it down to 60watts. My experience is that the cheap Chinese motors aren't quite as good as the real deal; they seem to have more loss. You might want to check out HobbyKings USA warehouse, Shipping is a lot quicker and they have a reasonably good selection of motors.

If it is underpowered on the Skyray I'm not out a lot of coin.  I am planning on a 850mAh 3S battery so going to a slightly bigger motor won't be an issue.  I haven't bought the battery yet, still waiting on the slow boat.  All I have in the eflight timer so far, and tracking numbers.

Funny thing is it seem ALL these motors are made in China, regardless of brand...yes, I am sure quality varies.

Waiting on connectors...haven't ordered batteries yet.  Since I have the motor now I know I need to make doublers or a standoff because the wires come out the back on this tiny little motor.

Seriously considering ordering a KR Governor timer instead of using the Eflight timer.  I like the idea that the system gets turned off in a crash which WILL happen to this plane.

I plan to get a battery (and fuel for the other planes) at a not quite local brick and mortar.  Going to pick up a gallon of high nitro fuel is $20-$30, ordering it is $100+ hmm...

96 grams with 4 hour old final coat of rustoleum and no controls.  I might be a shade over the 100 gram mark, but rustoleum takes weeks to gas off fully.  Gonna put controls in soon, maybe today.
