1/2 A conversion , need setup please ?
« on: January 07, 2010, 03:53:50 AM »
I have a baby Flite Streak, weighs 9 ozs ready to fly
would like suggestions for setup list to convert to
Electric for indoor flying, would the lists already in
place be overkill as the line length will be limited to
20--30 feet ?

I am really out of my league here in helping you answer your questions but it sounds to me that your Baby Flite Streak is overweight to start off with. Not to heavy to fly but I think too heavy to fly really well.

What engine and covering do you have?

In my limited lekkie understanding, the plane needs a number of things.
1. light weight. Light weight means light wing loading and therefore slower flying speeds are attainable.

2. Slower speed. you need slower speed in order to get the most out of the shorter line length otherwise you won't have the least bit of fun flying it and it could be dangerous as well.

3. Larger diameter prop. You will need this to provide the adequate thrust at slower prop speeds.

4. longer legs for prop clearance.

If I am wrong about any of this, please correct me as I have a lot to learn myself. The above comments were based on life as I perceive it to now.

Vincent,
I am not too sure about overkill, but the plane needs to fly at some airspeed to handle well. Shorter lines don't really change that--except the you will have more tension simply due to the formula for tension being inversely proportional to line length (and directly proportional to the mass and square of velocity).

So I would say you can use what we found as a start. It is always possible to reduce thrust (rpm or prop change) to slow the plane down if all else is ok, but darned difficult to increase thrust if you are already at the max possible of the setup!

Thanks for your interest Alan,

I flew this in a 20mph wind , it was quite good, but I only risked one loop

AP 061 glow engine , film covering, built from Brodak kit

I cant now make this any lighter, but will assess the whole idea properly

after the weather clears enough to measure the available ceiling in the

sports hall that I have in mind to fly in, then armed with line length I

should be able to put a setup together.

Well I am impressed that you can fly an 061 powered plane on ~20 foot lines in a 20mph wind---and do a loop! I would look like this after that flight! n~

Vincent,

This set-up should get you what you need.  You may consider lightening up the airframe to save additional weight, but these components are very light to start with.  The large prop diameter offers good thrust to weight even @ 9 ozs.

Prop: GWS 7 x 3.5 or 8 x 4 (Contra prop (LH) would be better for short lines to limit torque effect)

Good Luck with what ever you decide!!

Greatly appreciate your reply Archie

I have 3 possible venues, 2 sports halls and 1 Scouts hall
to inestigate for height and width, line length before I go
any further, which will take a month or two, at the moment
we are snowed in here !
It looks like I can get your setup items from Hobby King
their prices are very good, will post all in due course

Please keep us updated how it works for you.  I have the equivalent Hextronik 24gram motor in 1300Kv and it is a very good motor, but needs 3S to get any power out of it.

I built a Baby Flite Streak that weighed 9+ ozs., with  Cox .049 it was a pig. Definitely build light if you want it to fly worth a hoot.

Archie I got the 1/2a conversion that you suggested,  2211-1700 Turnegy,  Rhino 2s 750 7.4 v 20c, Turnigy speed controller, Will Hubin timer,
It seams that I can't get enough thrust to row on the ground, should I go to a bigger prop. or 3s battery plane weighs 11.3 oz ??? HB~> HB~>

Larry,

What type of airframe, what size prop, and how long of lines?

You are going to need thrust, so I would say use a 8 x 3.8 SF APC or even a GWS prop.  That weight is a bit heavy for this motor, but it should get it off the ground.

What is the current you are seeing?  Are you sure that the timer is getting you full throttle?

Let me know what you find out.

Thanks,
