Surpass FS-26
« on: June 22, 2017, 07:00:28 PM »
I have one of these laying around,  is it worth messing around with putting on a C/L airplane?

I have one on an RM+P from Pat Johnston and one in a regular scratch built S1 ringmaster. I also have an OS 20 FS in a scratch built ringmaster. I would have to say, it's my absolute favorite set up.

What do you do with it being R/C? Do you just block it wide open or is there a C/L set up?

What prop are you running with your set up?

Here's the carb modification on one of them. I turned out an aluminium barrel on the lathe and drilled it for a nylon screw. That's the venturi size adjuster. It's choked about half way. It's essentially what bob Reeves did with the Saito engines. That's who I talked to to make this thing.

This one I copied from Bob Zambelli. I cut the carb off the manifold and pressed on a nylon bushing. The one in the pic is on a .30, but the one on my .26 is the same thing. It's like a .118 or .125 ID bushing, just drilled out on one end to press over the manifold. Then cross drilled to accept the OS FP style springy NVA. Probably the easiest mod for these little engines.

Cool! I like it, you are my hero this time!

I like your Ringmaster too, it looks great.

Thanks!

Oh and so far, it's favorite prop is a 9x5 or 9x6. Mostly the 9x6. The black master airscrew ones seems to be the real hot ticket!

Where do you think I could get a muffler for it?  Mine is missing, just has the tube.

What size tanks are you running on the FS ringmasters, Dane, and what size with the fp20?
Thanks,
Chris

I use either a "4 ounce" RC clunk tank (filled to a little over half), or a 2.5 ounce hard tank (filled most of the way) for the 20FP. Once it is broken in it uses something just under 2 ounces. It's probably even less for a 26 Surpass.

BTW, one of the most important things you need to do for a 4-stroke is use a clunk tank. All the early BS, stated as immutable fact, that said a Veco T-21 style tank being fine was the usual "self-appointed expert" stuff. At some NATS, Brad "Godzilla" Walker put Jim Aron onto that, and he wound up being able to fly something like *1/2 second* slower with good overhead tension with the clunk tank (presumably keeping it from going over-the-hill lean overhead). You might get away with a "2 ounce" Sullivan tank for the 26, but I doubt it with the 20FP, because the actual capacity isn't really 2 ounces.

Brett is right on with that. I run a 4oz clunk tank on the wrong side on most of my profiles. I put about 2.5oz in for the .26 and I think 3oz in for the .30

Oh, and I don't run an FP 20 on a ringmaster. It's the little FS .20. Less power, cool sound. Lol

FS?
I think you mean the os four stroke .26?
Yes,  I'm interested in that setup.
What's a +P ringmaster? Does it have a different,  non-pollywog airfoil?  I did a search and came up with nada.

It's a Pat Johnston thing.  I think it's got a different airfoil (which means that, technically, it won't be legal for Old Time stunt, but still a big ball of fun).

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Correct. It's from Pat Johnston. Look at the construction of the wing on that clear airplane. It's an I beam style spar. Very different airfoil.

The clear airplane has an FS26. This purple and white airplane is Kristina's. It has an FS20. I put a 2oz tank on this one, because i wasn't worried about flight time. We usually fly it on 52' lines, it's a little weak. But it does loops and figure 8's just fine. Poor airplane hasn't been flown since last year's ringmaster fly-a-thon. I should fix that hole in the wing. Lol

Chris

I missed this question altogether. I'm very sorry. I have some wierd feelings on the muffler. During all my initial testing, the os 20, 26 and 30 did not respond well to having a muffler and running essentially wide open. They got hot and leaned out. Or leaned out first and got hot. I don't know. But they always got hot. After playing around, I accidentally removed the muffler, I can't remember why, and just ran it on suction alone. So smaller venturi, no muffler. So far I've found that this works best for me, on OS tiny 4 strokes. This is not true for saito. Only these 3 models of OS.

Also, I can't tell any sound difference. They're quiet enough with no muffler, people think I'm flying electric. Lol. But if you want one to try, send me a PM

Mr. Target,

Any provision to control the choke area?

Ahhh, the old drill bit technique!

On the one 4S I got a chance to play with a bit, the change in airspeed (power) with seemingly small changes in venturi size was impressive. This was on a big Saito, so it may not be an issue with a smaller engine using more of the available power?

You might bring some small O-rings and pantyhose with you, just in case it is breathing a bit too much. Kind of an anti-drill bit.

It's the small TD venturi (I think a #32 bit?), so I am hoping it would only need opening not reducing. But the P/H is probably something I should bring with me anyway, incase I soil mine.....
Thanks for the reminder.
I hope to have results for this mod before the end of the year, LOL.

Does someone have the P/N for the intake gasket between head and elbow? Is that even available anymore?
Yes, I have looked here-

Chris,

Did you ever get any time on this TD venturi setup?
