I have a Strega ARF i want to try 4 strokes on i have Satio .56 a .62 and a .72 which one would work best on this plane?
-
.62 or .72 use 13-14" prop Strega is big plane.
-
You know, the ONLY thing that stops me from purchasing the Saito 91 is the stinkin .021 line size requirement.
-
Check with Bob Reeves .... he is on the forum and he does Saito 4 stroke a lot.

The line requirements are weight-based now (since 2009, I think) instead of displacement. The breakpoint for .021 lines is 90 ounces or above. Up to 90, you can use .018s.

Hi Brad,
The .62 or 72 should work, the 62 is insanely strong, I flew some of Jimmy Welch's birds with the 62.
Do check some of the older threads for some of Brett's comments on construction of the Strega ARF, especially the wing leading edge. Also, make sure the wing fuselage joint is really good, especially in front. I know of three Southeast guys off the top of my head that had structural failures (some spectacular) from the airplane breaking in half at the front wing/fuselage joint.
-
The 62 can handle the Strega but, the 72 will be running in it's sweet spot. Less heat, more reliable runs back to back. More flexibility on props etc. Plus the MOST important part is that, the 72 will put hair on your chest!!

I was hoping Bob Reeves would chime i on this one he must be busy.

He is working on getting a new Van. I think he is going to put a "BR" carb in it. LL~

Is .015 still 64oz?

It's straight out of the first page of the rule book, but yes, .015 stranded up to 64 oz.

Thanks, since relocation I have been slack on the rules.

Saito 72! no doubt in my mind.
Martin
p.s. Round the LE as much as possible and DISCARD THE STOCK FLAPS! make new flaps as thick as possible, no taper, and leave the T.E. square. This will make the flap torsion wise stronger and do a better job keeping the angle of attack at the tip of the wing. I did that and also reinforcing the flap with two layers of fiber glass to make it stronger. The other guys that only rounded the LE and used the stock flaps would stall in the corners much easier then mine even though they were lighter. Make sure you seal the hinge line too.

HI Brad
The Saito 62 will handle the plane just fine with no problems
Randy

If you can find a good used Saito 56, it will work wonders.

Since where heading in this direction,Brad should seriously consider a Saito 40A in the Strega. LL~ LL~

The 62 and 72 will pull the plane just fine, the 40 will NOT. The 40 will work OK if he just wants to go around in level flight n1

Randy, I am obviously joking-maybe I should have said Saito 30. ;)
-
I've got an OS 26 FS!
-
The Saito 62 will work fine if it is not too windy. On windy days, you will regret not having more power.
If I had to pick a 4S engine for a Strega I would go with a Saito 91.
I used a Saito 72 in a Al Rabe P-51, even an OS FS 48 would work fine in that plane. But the the extra power of the 72 was great having in windy days.

Yes I knew that, that is why I quoted with the 2 funny faces and added my own funny face finger waver :-)
...hmmm maybe twin 30s :-)

Martin, I just relocated to Texas and I am looking to go with the .91 next time out. The bigger they get the less work they have to do, and they run cooler and hence more consistent from flight to flight. My 72 uses about the same amount of fuel as a 50 so I figure the .91 will use about amount as 60.
It has consistently used about 5oz. per flight it's whole life-same as the ST51 while putting out stinkin load of power. The 72 and 91 are almost the same size. There is NO conditions down here in Texas, that the 91 can't cut through. If there is, I am quitting and going full time to RC. LL~
When i'm at the field, I don't want a bunch of excuses, I want power and plenty of it!!

You can put in anything you like.. However he is asking about a ARF STREGA not one built and painted that weighs twiced as much, a 91 will shake an ARF Stega to death.
The 62 or 72 will pull the ARF STREGA though winds and bad condition, the 62 will turn a 14 inch prop easy, and if more power is needed the 62 takes to NITRO very well, He will not suffer from not putting a 91 in an ARF light monokoted STREGA. The 62 or 72 will work just fine, even in BAD conditions. Heck I even have a 2 stoke 88 that would pull the wings off of it :-)

As far as fuel goes you all run 4 stroke fuel or 2 stroke fuel 10% 23% half castro and half synthetic?
-
If you are running a 4 stroke ... the best fuel I have found is Power Master YS Saito 20/20
-
Is the 62 lighter than the 72? I think the 62 is insanely powerful for its size.

Yes it is lighter. It is very powerful for it's size. But then, my Saito 40A will out hustle my ST46 easily. I think the Saito 82 has the highest power to weight ratio in the line-up check that out. I could be wrong, and it may be the Saito 125,(a sweet RC motor by the way).
-

Hi Steve
The 62 is based on the same size block as the 56, it is much lighter than the 72 by about 2 ounces, it is also very close in power to the 72.
Again it is plenty for an ARF. If your building a much heavier ship then I might consider a 91. ;D ;D

Hey Brad, thought you had already made this decision, go with the 72. Break the engine in with the RC carb then send me the carb.
Ya, been busy and haven't been checking the forum often. Wife's Saturn died, gave her the 05 Caravan and upgraded my airplane hauler to a 2013 Grand Caravan with Stow-n-Go seats. Man that new 3.6 engine is an animal, 283 horses out of a V6... amazing.
-
thanks Bob i will do that as soon as gets a little warmer here.

Ok, I will bite - what the heck is a "2 stoke 88?"
(Semi serious question there.)

Ya, with propane prices going out of sight I'm having a hard time getting in the right mind set to go out to my shop to do anything.
You only need to get it past the low speed part of the break-in with the RC carb < 4000 RPM for the first 10 minutes. The balance can be done with a modified carb. BTW: the 62 and 72 carbs can be interchanged after the mod is done. They are the same body, I haven't looked to see if the part numbers are different, 72 may have a larger opening in the stock barrel. Never really paid any attention as the stock barrel goes away with the mod anyway.

Not Randy, but I have held that engine. It is built in a ST .60 case. It "might" be the one with three glo plugs. (one of the large capacity engines had three glo plugs.)

I bought a new Town n Country in 2009, took in for service last month and the gave me a brand new one to drive, Think it had a 7 speed and would fly, amazed at the hp and performance of the new ones... and I was pretty happy with the power of mine.. untill I drove the new one. I also hear the " Economy mode switch " really does work !
Randy
PS GREAT airplane hauler !

I wrote an article about the ARF Strega/SAITO 62 CL combination.
Published in the September, 2008 Flying models it should be some help.
The combination was perfect and needed very little trimming.
Weighing 73 ounces, it went through the wind like a bullet - plenty of power.
Make sure the engine breathes OUTSIDE AIR.
Pay ESPECIALLY close attention to page 74.
If you cannot obtain the article, contact me.

Hi Randy,
How do you think the "88" would work in one of Al's Classic legal Mustang I? How big of a fuel tank is needed?
BIG Bear
RNMM/AMM
-
Do not use fuel with castor oil in it. YS 20/20 synthetic oil will do just fine. No castor.

The 88 would be better in the BIG BearCat, the little 74s (8 ounces)would work very well in the Mustang, remember AL used a ST 46 based motor

I know this might sound odd, but has anyone thought about the Saito 65 Gold Knight?
I have one and Bob has one of my carbs doing the conversion for me. I have another RC one for break in.
Thanks

Saito 65, 19.4 ounces 0.95 HP..
Saito 56, 14.5 ounces 0.90 HP
Saito 62, 14.8 ounces 1.0 HP...
Saito 72 16.5 ounces 1.2 HP
65 has about the same power as the 62 but you are adding ~5 ounces to the nose, if you can shorten the nose... on a Strega ARF or ARC that would be tough.
Just for grins
Saito 40a, 10.5 ounces 0.65 HP
Fox 35, ~7 ounces 0.45 HP

Don't be a wuss, stick the 91 in it. LL~

How much do we shorten the nose for the 91??? ;D ;D ;D #^

ps errr maybe add the 2 wing nacelles and go back with the Saito 40s #^

Nice and short!! LL~
On a serous note, I was just about the pull the trigger on the 91, and Jose Modesto talked me out of it. Convinced me to stay the the 72's, which I have been running and flying with for about forever!
