Saito 45
« on: April 04, 2019, 05:15:06 PM »
I have a Saito 45 coming to me as it seems the Saito is always out of reach with prices.

My question is what would the Saito 45 equal to in 2 stroke engine size?

I have a Brodak Me109 and nothing better sounding that the grunt of a 4stroke on a warbird.

It isnt setup for CL yet.

 Thoughts?

Hi, James.
I believe this is the engine you have: FA-45.
I have had a few of these engines. They run extremely well, start easily and are very smooth and quiet.
However, they're not up to the specific power* of the later SAITO engines.
And, they're quite heavy at around 14.5 ounces.
No problem - just shorten the nose and use a small tank - I could do the pattern with mine on 2 1/2 ounces.
They like a lot of pitch. I used an 11-8 Master Airscrew.
SAITO later came out with a .50 in the same case, slightly lower weight, thus increasing the specific power output.
As far as comparable two-stroke power, I would compare it to an LA-40 or FP-40.

Go for it!

Bob Z.

An important reminder!!!

When you get your SAITO 45, remove the glow plug and remove the rocker covers.
Gently push on the rockers to insure that the valves move freely.
If they move, flood the valve gear with oil, insuring that it goes down the pushrod tubes.
Squirt some oil into the crankcase breather and cover the breather.
Shake the engine around to insure that everything inside is coated with oil.
Now, GENTLY turn the engine and observe the valve action.
If the valve opens but does not close, you've got a stuck lifter.
You can usually free it up by pushing down on the pushrod end of the rocker arm, repeating the procedure a few times.
Once you're sure that the the valve train is free, check the valve lash - should be around .002".
Again flood the valve train with oil, replace the rocker covers and plug and you should be ready to run it.

I'm issuing this warning for one main reason: When a 4S engine sits for a long time, the valves will sometimes stick.
If you turn it over and bend a valve, your new expensive engine becomes a paperweight.
As far as I know, there are NO spare parts available.

So, build the ME 109, mount the SAITO in it and enjoy some really fun flying.

Bob Z.

Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Appreciate the heads up!!

As far as I know the motor is a runner... granted that is for RC.

I got it at a decent price of $65. So hopefully its still in good shape to be usefull.

Your going to find out first hand ,why these motors are so desirable worldwide. The 56 is where your really starting to get into world class capability. I own 3 Saitos and going after a 4th.

Make sure you get a plane with a thicker than normal airfoil. Trust me on this-I know!

James - you mentioned obtaining a SAITO 56.
Believe me, that is one fine engine.

Regarding what to put it in, what do you have in mind?

Sport flying, profile, Old Time Stunt, Classic Stunt, ama stunt, etc.
Any plane designed for engines .50 to .60 will be perfect for the SAITO 56.

You can scratch build or check out the Brodak catalog.

I had an os52 in my RM800. It only weighed 54oz ready to fly. And the Saito 56 is twice the engine. Lol

I am a fan of the Saito .56 also, and have a few plus a .62. Mine is in a Top Flite Score ARF, if you can lay your hands on one of those. Like Bob mentioned, any 60 size airplane with a healthy wing will be fine. The first four stroke I got to fly was Keith Sandberg's Legacy with a .56 in the nose that gave me the four stroke bug. It was a stock kit built airplane with the nose shortened an inch, if I remember correctly. VERY NICE combo! A Patternmaster would be another choice right off the top of my head. I have a set of cores for one of those and plans, so maybe some day!!I follow the Bob Reeves method of setting up a Saito and that is here on this forum I'm sure , plus on the Tulsa Gluedobber's website. They are defiantly a viable power plant and very interesting to run. I'm not ready to sell off all my Super Tigres just yet, but the Saitos ain't going anywhere either!!
