Title: Saito 40 & Brodak Smoothie

Hi All,
For my next build (a Brodak Smoothie) I would like to try a four stroke. In particular the Saito 40a.
Has anyone tried this combination?  Would this be a good match for the airframe? or too heavy?
What is the general thoughts on tanks for this engine? clunk tank or Uni Flow control line tanks. How sensitive is this engine to tank height and position?

Any help, thoughts or experience on this subject would be greatly appreciated!

The 40a is the heavy case version, but it's shockingly powerful. I personally would not hesitate to do exactly what you're thinking. I've run the 40 on a couple planes that guys like to run 46la engines on. It's a great power plant.

I like a regular clunk tank. I do not run muffler pressure, but there's a few more fellas here more knowledgeable on Saito set up.

Paul - what Dane says is true.
The 40A is a real powerhouse.
In my humble opinion, possibly even a bit much for the Smoothie.
I flew my Argus (similar in size to the Smoothie) for years with a Saito 30 and it was great.

BUT, the real expert is Bob Reeves. I'm convinced that he knows more about Saitos than Mr Saito himself!!   #^  #^

Thanks for the reply, I'm coming to the conclusion that the 40 might be a bit much as well. I think I'll start looking for a 30 :)

Very true. My twister started life with a 30 four stroke on it. Had it that way for quite some time, and it was great.
I only changed it for testing.  But the 30 is great

Definitely skip the 30 and go with the 40A. The closer you run an engine to the edge, the less consistent it becomes. You can run the 40A slower, cooler, more consistent. The game for us is consistent runs. Inconsistent runs knocks out your timing and reflexes. A Saito 40A will blow a top of the line ST46 away. I own both.
