My "new" Magnum XL 91 cubic inch 4-stroke.
« on: January 28, 2025, 02:05:14 PM »
I got this quarter scale Piper Cub in an estate selloff and stored it for about a decade.  Last weekend I took a poke at selling it at small local swap meet.  That was a waste of time because the event was populated entirely by would-be sellers and not any buyers.

I never tried run or fly the thing, but with plane looks totally virgin.  After the meet I tested all the servos with good success.  I finally took off the cowl and discovered an XL Magnum 91 that had been put away dirty.  I got it cleaned, oiled and loosened-up.  I was able to easily download the owner's manual.  The glow plug even works.  The recommended fuel is the same as the Ritch's Brew I have on hand.  I've got a good HD electric starter.

I'm just waiting for a not-so-cold day the bark it.  This will be my first attempt with 4-stroke or any model engine over 65 cubic inches.

Based on observations, but not first hand experience, I expect good idling, good throttle response, and a power-to-weight ratio that is far inferior to both 2-stroke engines and electric motors.

Well, I never got a chance to run the 4-stroke.

A "possible" customer from the swap actually showed up the cash and bought the whole rig.  I am very glad to decrease my hoard by a little bit and not be one more modeler who has takes it all to the grave.

I really hated the idea of wrecking a nice plane trying learn to fly RC, but I was beginning to get tempted.
