Rule clarification for F2CN
« on: November 13, 2019, 08:06:09 PM »
With renewed interest in F2CN (profile team race), it's time to clarify the rules regarding exhaust shrouds/shields/covers. The F2CN rules say they are the same as for F2C unless otherwise noted. Since the F2C exhaust cover attaches to the fuselage, it is generally understood to not be applicable to a profile model. Nonetheless, it is probably a good idea to put it in writing. I will be asking the NCLRA district reps to vote to approve adding the following sentence to the NCLRA rules. "Rule pertaining to exhaust shields or covers shall not apply to F2CN". If approved, this will go into effect in January 2020. Please contact your district rep with your opinion, and feel free to share it here as well.

Probably a good idea, and agree that now's the time, Bill.

I can't think of any of the engines that are in use that have provisions to attach a muffler. If they did, it would be a very nice feature and I'd sure be willing to try it. But they don't.... (Nelson, Parra, Profi....)

We could probably come up with a reliable way of attaching something useful to the plane on a profile but it would take some work, and would be different for every engine so guys would pretty much be on their own, since there just aren't very many out there....

I've never read the rule but someone told me the pilot can't see the piston? If so you don't need a shield on a profile. What is the reason for this rule anyway so the pilot is not subject to the direct blast of noise? also not a problem on a profile.

I vote to approve this sentence being added to the F2CN rules: "Rule pertaining to exhaust shields or covers shall not apply to F2CN".

I don't believe in adding unnecessary complication to a simple event (no mufflers exist for my Nelson's, I don't want to design, manufacture and test one), and equally important to me, I would have to re-balance my model due to an added muffler, and don't want to add any more weight.

While we're discussing rule additions, what do the F2CN entrants think about adding the option of using .015 braided line for those that may choose to use them, or do we already have that option?

The rules for F2C and F2CN require minimum .35mm line diameter. They can be solid or stranded. Since this is about .014", you can already use .015 stranded lines if you wish.

Attention F2CN enthusiasts. In case you have not heard, the NCLRA rules have been officially amended so that exhaust shrouds, baffles, etc. are NOT required in F2CN. The rules on the NCLRA web page have been updated to reflect this change.
